{"id":264866,"date":"2025-09-29T21:58:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T21:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/264866\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T21:58:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T21:58:13","slug":"days-after-shooting-dallas-ice-office-remains-closed-as-migrants-have-scant-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/264866\/","title":{"rendered":"Days after shooting, Dallas ICE office remains closed as migrants have scant information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">William Arvelo drove more than six hours from Corpus Christi with his wife and 1-year-old-son to meet with immigration officials in Dallas on their pending asylum case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Less than one week earlier, a gunman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/ice-office-shooting\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/ice-office-shooting\/\">opened fire<\/a> on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Dallas, killing one detainee and critically wounding two before taking his own life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">On Monday morning, Arvelo, who is originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2025\/05\/08\/baseball-helps-venezuelan-team-in-dallas-cope-with-the-fear-of-being-detained-and-deported\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2025\/05\/08\/baseball-helps-venezuelan-team-in-dallas-cope-with-the-fear-of-being-detained-and-deported\/\">from Venezuela<\/a>, arrived with his wife, Julia Pinto, to find the office still closed despite earlier plans to reopen. Many said the meetings were already fraught even before Wednesday\u2019s shooting. In some cases, migrants in North Texas have been detained when they showed up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2025\/05\/23\/11-detained-at-dallas-immigration-court-friday-by-plainclothes-officers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2025\/05\/23\/11-detained-at-dallas-immigration-court-friday-by-plainclothes-officers\/\">scheduled check-in or court hearing<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Clasping folders with immigration documents, many said they are anxious, confused and unable to get answers from ICE. Some said they have missed multiple days of work as they wait for an appointment. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">All three people shot were migrants: Norlan Guzman-Fuentes, from El Salvador, was killed. Jose Andres Bordones-Molina, from Venezuela, and Miguel Angel Garcia-Hernandez, from Mexico, were wounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">ICE officers and facilities have faced a flurry of threats since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2025\/02\/25\/trump-proposes-fines-prison-for-migrants-illegally-in-us-who-dont-register\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump ordered a widespread crackdown<\/a> on illegal immigration. On July 4, a planned protest at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/09\/23\/men-accused-in-north-texas-ice-facility-attack-to-be-arraigned-in-fort-worth\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ICE detention center in Alvarado<\/a> escalated with one officer shot. Edgar Peralta, a Dallas chiropractor originally from Mexico, accompanied his Cuban-born partner Monday for her immigration check-in. Scanning nearby rooftops, Peralta said he felt exposed and surprised by the lack of information from officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m upset, angry, disappointed and scared for many reasons,\u201d said Peralta, 51, a U.S. citizen. \u201cWe feel like sitting ducks here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In recent months, Peralta said he is inclined to carry proof of citizenship with him at all times \u201cbecause of the color of my skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Nearby, Edixon Delgado, 33, clutched a cup of gas station coffee as he paced a parking lot adjacent to the ICE office. Delgado, who is from Venezuela, repeatedly called the phone number listed on his immigration paperwork, but no one answered. Delgado had to miss work multiple times trying to make his appointment, and his kids have missed school as a result. He worries that if he fails to show up to his appointments, he&#8217;ll be deported at his November court hearing, leaving his U.S.-born son alone. <\/p>\n<p>Azul Sordo<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Carlos Enrique, 37, who moved to the U.S. from Cuba four years ago, wanted to find a way to prove that he showed up for his first-ever immigration meeting. Enrique, who works for a housing rental company in Dallas, asked a law enforcement officer if he could take a time-stamped selfie of himself outside the ICE building. The officer said no.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Around 9:30 in the morning, a federal officer, through a translator, told those gathered that the office would not reopen Monday, but that they should continue calling to schedule a new appointment.
