X\u2019s settlement in February involved a payment of around $10 million, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/12\/technology\/musk-x-settles-trump-lawsuit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Times<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg5nh2ft00063b6n3ip0nhzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When they suspended his accounts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/08\/tech\/trump-twitter-ban\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">platforms<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/04\/tech\/facebook-politicians\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Trump\u2019s posts about the riot risked inciting further violence. At the time, legal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/07\/tech\/trump-zuckerberg-dorsey-lawsuit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experts said<\/a> similar suits had been dismissed because tech companies have the right to run their platforms as they see fit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg5nh97s000a3b6ngivubh8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the settlements come as tech giants have taken a more conciliatory, if not outright supportive, approach to Trump and Republican interests since he took office in January.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg5nhhw6000d3b6n1f0xz3qo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After Elon Musk acquired X \u2014 then known as Twitter \u2014 in late 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/19\/business\/twitter-musk-trump-reinstate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he reinstated Trump\u2019s account<\/a>; Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/09\/tech\/trump-facebook-instagram-restored\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">followed suit<\/a> in February 2023 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/17\/tech\/youtube-restoring-trump-channel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube<\/a> the following month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg5nhmps000g3b6nqjod0hs8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/09\/tech\/tech-leaders-supported-trump-lost-money-dg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all sat front and center<\/a> at Trump\u2019s inauguration, and social media platform has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/07\/tech\/meta-censorship-moderation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rolled back content moderation efforts<\/a> that Republican users had likened to censorship.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg5nhqmo000j3b6nz8k8jf7i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just last week, YouTube<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/24\/tech\/youtube-reinstate-banned-accounts-covid-19-2020-election\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> said it would reinstate some accounts<\/a> banned for violating now-defunct rules meant to curb repeated posting of misinformation, including about the results of the 2020 election.
