California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/strong><\/a> was blunt in his response to a false claim by Vice President JD Vance<\/strong> that Democrats are demanding a \u201c$1.5 trillion spending package that funded free health care for illegals\u201d to avoid a government shutdown, posting a four-word tweet.<\/p>\n With the deadline for a government shutdown looming on Oct. 1, Republicans and Democrats have been engaging in the usual partisan finger-pointing over which side should be blamed if a deal can\u2019t be reached.<\/p>\n One GOP claim that Vance has pushed is that the Democrats\u2019 version of the spending bill, which seeks to extend subsidies on Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) insurance premiums, would be tantamount to providing free health care to illegal immigrants. Democrats have loudly objected<\/a> to that accusation, pointing to federal law that prohibits illegal immigrants<\/a> from receiving coverage under Obamacare, Medicaid, and other federal programs \u2014 and the actual text of their version of the continuing resolution.<\/p>\n \u201cDonald Trump knows, or at least I think he knows, that current federal law prohibits using taxpayer dollars for undocumented immigrants in connection with their health care. And no one is trying to change or reverse that law,\u201d House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/strong> told MSNBC<\/a> over the weekend. \u201cWhat we are doing is fighting to protect the healthcare of everyday Americans in the midst of this Republican-caused crisis that is devastating hospitals and nursing homes and community-based health clinics.\u201d<\/p>\n Nonetheless, Vance and other Republicans have continued to make this false claim<\/a> in media interviews and other comments over the past few days, and the vice president repeated it on Monday.<\/p>\n In a video clip shared by the White House\u2019s rapid response account, Vance accuses Democrats of wanting \u201c$1.5 trillion spending package\u201d that would give \u201cmassive amounts of money\u201d to \u201cillegal aliens for their health care, while Americans are struggling to pay their health care bills,\u201d which he said was \u201cabsurd\u201d and \u201cunacceptable,\u201d and blamed them for trying to shut down the government.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Several pending Community Notes on the RapidResponse47 tweet note that federal law bars illegal immigrants from getting federal benefits like Medicaid and the text of the CR does not include such language.<\/p>\n As Jessica Riedl<\/strong>, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, pointed out, the claim that Democrats wanted to pay for health care for illegal immigrants was a \u201clie\u201d and \u201cnot merely an exaggeration or misinterpretation,\u201d but \u201ccompletely fabricated out of thin air.\u201d<\/p>\n Newsom, who has been sparring with increasing frequency with President Donald Trump<\/strong> in opinionated social media posts<\/a>, shared the video clip of Vance with a four-word caption.<\/p>\n \u201cBlatantly false, you dish*t,\u201d wrote Newsom.<\/p>\n \u201cRepublicans have control of the House, Senate, and White House,\u201d the governor added in a follow-up post. \u201cIf the government shuts down, it\u2019s on them.\u201d<\/p>\n The post Gavin Newsom Drops Four-Word Smackdown on Vance\u2019s Claim About Democrats Wanting \u2018Free Health Care for Illegals\u2019<\/a> first appeared on Mediaite<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"David Crane\/The Orange County Register via AP, File California Gov.
