The acting guild believes \u201ccreativity is, and should remain, human-centered\u201d and \u201cis opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTo be clear, \u2018Tilly Norwood\u2019 is not an actor, it\u2019s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers \u2014 without permission or compensation,\u201d SAG-AFTRA wrote in a statement. \u201cIt has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we\u2019ve seen, audiences aren\u2019t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience. It doesn\u2019t solve any \u2018problem\u2019 \u2014 it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe guild added, \u201cSignatory producers should be aware that they may not use synthetic performers without complying with our contractual obligations, which require notice and bargaining whenever a synthetic performer is going to be used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmid <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/ai-actress-tilly-norwood-backlash-hollywood-1236533740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing industry backlash<\/a> against Tilly Norwood, who was created by the AI production studio Particle6, creator Eline Van der Velden<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/ai-actress-tilly-norwood-backlash-hollywood-1236533740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> issued a defense<\/a> by saying Tilly \u201cis not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work \u2013 a piece of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool, a new paintbrush,\u201d Van der Velden\u00a0added. \u201cJust as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories. I\u2019m an actor myself, and nothing \u2013 certainly not an AI character \u2013 can take away the craft or joy of human performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHollywood stars such as Melissa Barrera, Kiersey Clemons, Mara Wilson and more were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/ai-actress-tilly-norwood-backlash-hollywood-1236533740\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quick to condemn<\/a>\u00a0the AI creation on social media. Whoopi Goldberg <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/whoopi-goldberg-slams-ai-actress-tilly-norwood-1236534165\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened an episode<\/a> of \u201cThe View\u201d by doubting an AI \u201cactor\u201d like Tilly could ever replace a human performer, adding: \u201cYou can always tell them from us. We move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/emily-blunt-ai-actress-tilly-norwood-reaction-1236534547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a podcast interview <\/a>with Variety, Emily Blunt was shown a picture of Tilly Norwood and reacted with shock and fear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDoes it disappoint me? I don\u2019t know how to quite answer it, other than to say how terrifying this is,\u201d Blunt said. \u201cNo, are you serious? That\u2019s an AI? Good Lord, we\u2019re screwed. That is really, really scary, Come on, agencies, don\u2019t do that. Please stop.
