Philly earned the distinction for the third year in a row. Take that, New York!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>MORE:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/septa-service-cuts-budget-approved-fare-hike-state-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEPTA board approves budget with looming service cuts and fare hike<\/a><\/p>\n<p>USA Today called attention to the city&#8217;s cultural and historic attractions and &#8220;gorgeous neighborhoods,&#8221; noting its walkability is &#8220;appreciated by both residents and visitors.&#8221;\u00a0Philly ranked above other nearby cities known for their walkability, including New York City, Washington and Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the final results of the\u00a0<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/10best.usatoday.com\/awards\/most-walkable-city-to-visit\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today 10Best Readers&#8217; Choice Award<\/a>\u00a0for most walkable city:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Philadelphia<\/li>\n<li>Providence, Rhode Island<\/li>\n<li>Burlington, Vermont<\/li>\n<li>Columbus, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Boston, Massachusetts<\/li>\n<li>San Francisco, California<\/li>\n<li>Chicago, Illinois<\/li>\n<li>Savannah, Georgia<\/li>\n<li>Washington<\/li>\n<li>New York City, New York<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Philly&#8217;s walkability largely can be chalked up to William Penn&#8217;s original design for the city.<\/p>\n<p>First envisioned as a &#8220;<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/william-penns-public-squares-a-slow-evolution-into-modern-philadelphia-parks\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greene country towne,<\/a>&#8221; Penn and surveyor Thomas Holme organized the original 1,200-acre city into a rectangular grid pattern, placing an emphasis on public squares and green spaces now known as Franklin, Logan, Rittenhouse and Washington squares. An avid gardener, Penn\u00a0envisioned his city&#8217;s residents using their spacious lots to maintain private gardens. They also could help protect against fires and illnesses like the plague.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, Center City spans just over two miles between the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, and boasts the\u00a0<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/10best.usatoday.com\/awards\/best-city-for-street-art\/\" style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best street art<\/a>\u00a0in America \u2014 also according to the 10Best Readers&#8217; Choice Awards. Last month, a <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/christian-to-crescent-trail-greys-ferry-center-city\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new pedestrian bridge<\/a> that connects two portions of the Schulykill River Trail opened, offering a scenic path from Center City to Grays Ferry.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t believe the hype? Just ask the nearly <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitphilly.com\/about\/visit-philadelphia-annual-report\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 million tourists<\/a> that visited Philadelphia last year.<\/p>\n<p>Philly&#8217;s walkability will be put to the test next year. The city anticipates an influx of tourists due to the semiquincentennial, FIFA World Cup and MLB All-Star Game.
