Keith Urban opened up about difficulties in his marriage to Nicole Kidman one year before their split.<\/a><\/p>\n

In April 2024, Urban, 57, honored Kidman, 58, at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala and recalled in his speech<\/a> how his addiction struggles<\/a> nearly tore apart their relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got married in June 2006 and barely four months\u00a0into our marriage, my addictions that I\u2019d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens,\u201d the country singer said onstage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I went into the Betty Ford Center for three months. Four months into a marriage, I\u2019m in rehab for three months,\u201d Urban remembered. \u201cI had no idea what was going to happen to us. And if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNic pushed through every negative voice, I\u2019m sure even some of her own and she chose love,\u201d Urban added. \u201cAnd\u00a0here we are tonight, 18 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kidman wiped away tears watching Urban\u2019s speech from the audience with their daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the thing about Nic \u2014\u00a0she loves life,\u201d Urban continued about the \u201cBig Little Lies\u201d actress. \u201cI\u2019ve actually never met anyone who has such a passion for being alive. She knows the importance of expressing feelings, as well. I wasn\u2019t raised like this at all, so our girls are very lucky to be learning from you, baby. I\u2019m learning to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Urban called Kidman \u201craw\u201d and \u201cresilient\u201d and noted that her mantra in life has always been to \u201cchoose love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a capacity to love like no one I\u2019ve ever met,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u00a0know tonight\u2019s all about her body of work so far. But next year will be 20 years that I\u2019ve been madly in love with you. Congratulations, baby girl. I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Urban fought drug and alcohol addictions even before he was married to Kidman.<\/p>\n

The \u201cSomebody Like You\u201d singer first entered a Nashville rehab for treatment in 1998. After marrying Kidman almost a decade later, he spent another few months at the Betty Ford Center at her insistence.<\/p>\n

In 2016, Urban told\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/a>\u00a0that Kidman staged an intervention for him at one point to deal with his demons.<\/p>\n

\u201cI caused the implosion of my fresh marriage,\u201d he\u00a0told the Australian version<\/a>\u00a0of the magazine in 2021. \u201cIt survived, but it\u2019s a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression \u2018I was born into her,\u2019 and that\u2019s how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post confirmed Monday that Urban and Kidman separated after almost 20 years of marriage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0A source\u00a0told Page Six<\/a> that Kidman did not want to split and tried saving their relationship, while TMZ<\/a> reported that the stars have been living apart \u201csince the beginning of summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Urban was the one who reportedly initiated the breakup.<\/p>\n

The Post reached out to Kidman and Urban\u2019s reps for comment.<\/p>\n

Urban\u2019s\u00a0last Instagram post<\/a>\u00a0with Kidman was shared on May 9, when he uploaded photos of them at the Academy of Country Music Awards.<\/p>\n

Their last public appearance<\/a> together was the following month at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, held at the Geodis Park stadium in Nashville, Tenn., on June 20.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Urban\u00a0abruptly cut an interview short<\/a>\u00a0after they asked about his wife\u2019s intimate scenes with Zac Efron in their 2024 flick, \u201cA Family Affair.\u201d<\/p>\n
