\n\tEXCLUSIVE: <\/strong>Steve Zahn<\/a> gulps down a swig of Evian and takes a moment to list what\u2019s on his plate: There\u2019s Hulu\u2019s sports comedy\u00a0Chad Powers<\/a>, out today<\/a>; he\u2019s in the UK shooting Season 4 of Apple TV+ series\u00a0Silo\u00a0into December. And, wait, he\u2019s got to fly to Brisbane, Australia, for two days of reshoots for Sony\u2019s Christmas Day release\u00a0Anaconda<\/a> and then hurry back to London to resume work on\u00a0Silo.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn between all of this, the actor made time to stop by a film festival screening in Lexington, Kentucky, of\u00a0director Rick Gomez\u2019s\u00a0She Dances<\/a>, a charmingly poignant independent film that features Zahn and his daughter Audrey Zahn. He co-wrote it with Gomez, his good friend, producing partner and, as it happens, a co-star in\u00a0Silo.<\/p>\n

\n\tUndoubtedly, Zahn\u2019s as enthusiastic about acting as he was when I first met him nearly 30 years ago when he was over in London promoting Tom Hanks\u2019 directorial debut,\u00a0That Thing You Do! I already knew his work, having caught a performance of Jonathan Marc Sherman\u2019s 1993 off-Broadway play\u00a0Sophistry\u00a0in which Zahn appeared with Calista Flockhart, Anthony Rapp, Austin Pendleton and Ethan Hawke, who was to become one of his closest friends and also is in\u00a0She Dances.<\/p>\n

\n\tLooking me straight in the eye, Zahn states: \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0that I like this job. I just love doing it. I love being a part of the circus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0Chad Powers, Zahn plays Jake Hudson, coach of the fictional team that Glen Powell\u2019s title character goes to try out with.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\n\tPowers is really a one-time star quarterback\u00a0Russ Holliday who bowed out of the game in disgrace\u00a0following an incident where his oversized ego over-engaged with a fan. Using his Hollywood makeup father\u2019s prosthetics, Holliday transforms himself into hayseed-like\u00a0Chad Powers.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show\u2019s based on a real-life stunt pulled off by Eli Manning on his ESPN+ show\u00a0Eli\u2019s Places\u00a0three years ago, when, as a joke, he got prosthetics and did a tryout for Penn State University\u2019s football team using the\u00a0Chad Powers\u00a0alias. Only the head coach knew it was Manning. Have a look at how that played out:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWhereas in the show, Zahn\u2019s Coach Hudson has no clue as to Powers\u2019 real identity.<\/p>\n

\n\tBasically, Zahn says,\u00a0Michael Waldron, the showrunner and writer with Powell,\u00a0approached them and said, \u201cWe want to take that character and make a show out of it.\u201d \u201cAnd so Eli and Peyton were like, \u2018Great. We want to produce it along with Hulu and Disney.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWe, the audience watching on Hulu and Disney+,\u00a0know the ruse, and the fact that Zahn\u2019s character is oblivious to it makes it funnier. The look of incredulity on Zahn\u2019s face, as Hudson, in dealing with the absurdity of\u00a0Chad Powers\u00a0is priceless.<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn says the coach not knowing worked in his favor \u201cbecause then you can back off of stuff because the audience is ahead of you. \u2026 And you don\u2019t have to hit anything over the head. And in fact, that would kill it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe admits that he was worried\u00a0for an instant because a show \u201clike this\u201d could easily \u201cgo astray\u201d\u00a0because of the different comedic tempos that are going on. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to really back off and just play the reality,\u201d Zahn insists.<\/p>\n

\n\tI come to\u00a0Chad Powers\u00a0as a Brit raised on the humor of Alan Bennett, Alan Ayckbourn, Morecambe and Wise, Benny Hill, Barbara Windsor, Hattie Jacques, Monty Python and all the rest, so I recognized, and found myself appreciating, Zahn\u2019s comic timing, and his restraint.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut playing the truth is always best,\u201d Zahn says as he spoke of receiving one of his \u201cgreatest lessons as an actor\u201d from\u00a0director Andrei \u0218erban, when he staged a production of Moli\u00e9re\u2019s\u00a0The Miser\u00a0for the American Repertory Theater in 1989 with\u00a0Zahn playing Cl\u00e9ante in a company that included Cherry Jones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWorking with \u0218erban was his baptism into theater, Zahn recalls. \u201cAnd it was a preview, and I was on stage and I did my thing. I got huge laughs, and I came off stage and he said: \u2018What you\u2019re doing right now is exactly what I hate.\u2019 And then he walked away and I was up all night, and it was a horrible night. I didn\u2019t know what he meant. And then I came in the next day and it was the opening night, and he could see I was distraught. And he said: \u2018Steve, when you lie,\u00a0lie.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh, wait a second. Yeah, man, I\u2019m hitting everything.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018No, play the truth.\u2019 And he\u2019s so right. And I\u2019ll always remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn played football in high school. He played corner and returned punts and kicks. The actor\u2019s remained a \u201chuge\u00a0football fan, especially college. I love college football. Like, Saturday\u2019s the day I watch football all day,\u201d he says, pointing to a laptop set on a kitchen worktop.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe supports the Kentucky Wildcats, and because he grew up supporting them, he still follows the Minnesota Vikings.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn prep for\u00a0Chad Powers, he went in and shadowed Mark Stoops, head coach of the Wildcats.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat guidance did he offer? I ask. \u201cOh my God, he answered every question that I threw at him,\u201d he marvels.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLike, \u2018Hey ,is there a strategy with screaming at the refs? Do you know those guys? Are they friends? Is that theater? Is it part theater?\u2019 And he was like, \u2018No. You have to calculate when to do it, when not to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn gives me a primer on how college football works these days now that college players get paid<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s a new thing,\u201d he says as he expounds on how the changes work. \u201cNow you\u2019ve got guys who are making a lot of money, 18-year-olds,\u201d he says with a look of concern.<\/p>\n

\n\tOK, enough of this foreign American football. The kicker is: Does he follow any British football?<\/p>\n

\n\tSitting up in his chair, he replies that he\u2019s addicted to BBC Sports show\u00a0Match of the Day, but he\u2019s keen to attend a live game.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe veer into dangerous territory when he announces that he\u2019d fancy watching Chelsea play. With dizzying speed, I quickly shout out that he should go and see an Arsenal game instead.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDid you just call me an asshole?,\u201d he inquires in mock jest.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOh, Arsenal,\u201d he repeats when I put him right.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe talks of taking deep dives into YouTube documentaries, recounting the old days when\u00a0brawls between rival supporters was the norm. \u201cI just thought that was really fascinating\u201d to understand what football was like in the UK in the 1970s and \u201980s.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe both bewail what\u2019s happened to football on both sides of the Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHe remembers as a kid going to see the Minnesota Vikings and he was able to approach players doing their summer training.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd he could approach his heroes and ask for their autographs. For 10 straight years he secured autographs from the likes of star quarterback Fran Tarkenton, running back Chuck Foreman, wide receiver Ahmad Rashad, defensive tackle Alan Page and many others.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut a lot of those guys had other jobs back then in the \u201970s. They had a hardware store or something and then they played football. Now you can\u2019t even get near them,\u201d they\u2019ve become \u2014 here as well \u2014 over idealized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd that\u2019s great, but also like\u2026,\u201d he says, rolling his eyes.<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn Googles Hall of Famer Tarkenton, who played in three Super Bowls, to see how much money he made over his playing career \u2014 \u201cand it was like half a million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s a monthly paycheck for some players now.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s that kind of money coupled with arrogance that makes Powell\u2019s Russ Holliday such an asshole. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a great character,\u201d Zahn says. \u201cI was really worried at first \u2026 But it works. It all works. And it doesn\u2019t waste its time explaining too much, which I love. Because we get right into it and you go like, \u2018OK, I believe all that. For some reason I believe that.\u2019 And it\u2019s because it\u2019s acted well. And Glen is remarkable in this show. I think I am blown away. Talk about a big swing. He stepped up into the batter\u2019s box and he just swung for the fences. \u2026 Home run. Grand slam.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI hear on the grapevine that there\u2019s already chatter about a possible Season 2 of\u00a0Chad Powers\u00a0shooting next year.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe Dances\u00a0caught me off guard. It has a sense of grace that I wasn\u2019t expecting. It\u2019s about a father who takes his daughter, played by Audrey Zahn, and her friend, played by Mackenzie Ziegler, on a road trip to a dance competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI ask Zahn about the film\u2019s genesis. He explains that during Covid he took\u00a0Audrey to her national advance dance competition \u201cand it was just me, and my wife couldn\u2019t go. And it was magical. It was great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the trip, Zahn kept calling Gomez extolling the costumes and the wacky splendor of the whole event.<\/p>\n

\n\tGomez thought there might be a story there. \u201cAnd we started kind of kicking it around,\u201d Zahn says.<\/p>\n

\n\tA mutual friend, movie producer Jason Reed (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), called out of the blue \u2013remember, this is during Covid \u2014 \u201cand he was like, \u2018Guys, do you have a story? Do you have something that\u2019s not cynical and that\u2019s like, pure?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey pitched Reed the dance competition story and wrote a 60-page outline. \u201cAnd he was like, \u2018Keep going.\u2019 And then our goal was to make a cinematic independent American movie for families. The films we grew up on were like,\u00a0Breaking Away,\u00a0Mask,\u00a0Diner, and they were just simple stories about people. And if you watch \u2019em now, you go like, \u2018Wow, man!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Zahn\u2019s\u00a0talking about these movies made by the likes of Peter Yates (Breaking Away), Peter Bogdanovich<\/a> (Mask) and Barry Levinson (Diner), I rerun them in my head. \u201cThere\u2019s something just beautiful about taking a breath. And we didn\u2019t reinvent anything. We just basically did that,\u201d he says, momentarily lost in thought of movies past.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis words \u201ctaking a breath\u201d resonate because I often feel that we\u2019re starved of movies where you can just sit in a theater without being assaulted by flying monsters and heaven only knows what else. Listen, I often adore those giant studio blockbusters, but ever so once in a while, I want to do as Zahn says \u2014 just sit and take a breath and watch an easy movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tPeople have, perhaps, adhered to She Dances because, Zahn suggests, \u201cAll of a sudden it\u2019s not watching YouTube shorts, and it\u2019s not cynical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAudrey has been dancing since the age of 3. \u201cI\u2019ve lived that world,\u201d says Zahn.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe\u2019s a very accomplished dancer,\u201d as he notes that she choreographed Hawke\u2019s movie\u00a0Wildcat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe also just finished filming thriller series\u00a0Imperfect Women\u00a0for Apple TV+.<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn laughs and says that for\u00a0She Dances,\u00a0\u201cwe did this secret thing that no one does anymore. It\u2019s called rehearsal. We kind of rehearsed it like a play and we were kind of in rehearsals for two weeks, off and on, people coming in and out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey set up pre-production in Midway, Kentucky, with a population of 1,600, where Zahn resides with\u00a0his wife, the bestselling author Robyn Peterman.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in Midway, it was a communal affair, with cast and crew walking or riding bikes to work. Rehearsal was made part of the budget. \u201cWe were adamant about that because we didn\u2019t have time. It was a 21-day shoot, so everybody was on the same page. Everybody knew what they were doing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\tI confess that I\u2019m not at all up to date with\u00a0Silo,\u00a0the Apple TV+ post apocalyptic drama that he\u2019s in the UK to shoot.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe joined in Season 2<\/a> as the character Solo, and they\u2019re now filming Season 4.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I\u2019m kind of this guy who\u2019s really brilliant, but he\u2019s like 11,\u201d he says, and when showrunner\u00a0Graham Yost and\u00a0star Rebecca Ferguson Zoomed and pitched it, \u201cI was like, \u2018Are you kidding? This sounds amazing. I\u2019ll do this in a second.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn recent weeks he and the cast have been filming exterior scenes around an old copper mine in Wales.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen we were arranging this interview, I had suggested that we meet in Soho \u2014 until, that is, it emerged that Zahn and I live within a 15-minute walk of each other in east London. The deal was that I\u2019d visit him at his swish, open-plan rental. Arriving early, I mill about his street and spot him emptying a food waste container.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love it here,\u201d he says as we swap notes about local food markets, the famous Columbia Road flower market in Bethnal Green and other favorite haunts to hang out in the east like The Marksman pub and restaurant in Hackney.<\/p>\n

\n\tI direct him to G Kelly, the pie & mash establishment on the Roman Road that serves steak pies with a special sauce known as liquor,\u00a0and jellied eels. That\u2019ll mark you as a proper East Ender, I say.<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn prefers the area to swankier parts of town like Notting Hill. \u201cI love it, but it\u2019s not my speed at all,\u201d he says of the trendy area forever linked with Roger Mitchell\u2019s\u00a0Notting Hill\u00a0starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.<\/p>\n

\n\t(Gotta tell you, by the way, that Roberts is extraordinarily good in Luca Guadagnino\u2019s\u00a0After the Hunt<\/a>, a movie that I\u2019m fascinated by.)<\/p>\n

\n\tBlimey, Zahn\u2019s such a seasoned East Ender that he was telling me stuff about my hood that I didn\u2019t know about. Like how many bombs were dropped in my square during World War II.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s so crazy because we\u2019ve probably rubbed shoulders without realizing while he\u2019s been doing his regular four-mile runs in the park while I\u2019ve been walking our two dogs. \u201cThat park where I run is my sanctuary,\u201d he declares. \u201cMy back is killing me, but I just have to do it. I just get to reach that point where you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, remember the old days?\u2019\u00a0Like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m going to a wedding in two weeks. I\u2019m going to lose 10 pounds,\u2019 and you could do it. Now. It\u2019s like, \u2018Oh f*ck, man,\u2019\u201d he sighs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd he enjoys running in London parks \u201cbecause I get to see people. All I see\u00a0in Kentucky is cows and horses when I run, and the neighbor and the mailman, and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs we both tuck into fresh croissants, he says: \u201dI got to eat good and I got to work out. I got to lift. I got to run just to look normal. So, yeah, I\u2019m at that stage right now. I try to keep in shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in Kentucky, Zahn has horses and goats \u201cand it\u2019s all horses around me. I\u2019m in the middle of a thousand-acre horse farm,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe late Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> used to visit her prize horses \u201cright down the road,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe has a memory of being ever so slightly in her late majesty\u2019s presence when there was a hold-up on the interstate and cars in front wouldn\u2019t let him and his friends pass. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018This is ridiculous!\u2019 I started writing down a license plate number and everything. And then we finally get to the exit and there\u2019s a ton of cars, and we all in a moment understood. We\u2019re like, \u2018Wow! It\u2019s the Queen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer majesty \u201cwas right in Midway, went right through my little town, 1,600 people. My neighbor across the street \u2026 he\u2019s got pictures of the Queen on their farm in the \u201980s, coming to see her horses. She loved it there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo we have an affinity for her in Kentucky just because she would come visit and she loved it there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZahn used to raise quarterhorses and ride a lot, but now he has retired thoroughbreds.<\/p>\n

\n\tI ask what he does with them. \u201cPoint and laugh at \u2019em,\u201d he jokes. \u201cThey\u2019ve worked their asses off for six years \u2014 running, racing, getting hurt. They\u2019re great because they\u2019ve been through everything. So they\u2019re bulletproof, and they\u2019re really great kind of companions and buddies. I just take care of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt seems a good counterpoint to a Hollywood lifestyle. \u201cYeah, but I\u2019ve always been outside it,\u201d he responds. \u201cSo I don\u2019t really know that lifestyle. I\u2019ve never really been a part of that. I mean, maybe when I was younger and stuff, and when shooting in L.A. when you used to make movies in L.A., the old days.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEven so, he admits that Hollywood was never really for him. \u201cI love New York. I was a theater guy,\u201d he says of his early acting years. He met Peterman on the 1991 national tour of\u00a0Bye Bye Birdie\u00a0starring Ann Reinking and Tommy Tune, and they\u2019ve \u201cbeen together forever\u201d since.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey bought a cabin in the Poconos with \u201call this money\u201d they made from the tour, but they couldn\u2019t afford a place in town as well so they moved to the mountains. \u201dSo we\u2019ve always been outside, always been unique in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSomehow, I have a vision of Zahn that\u2019s set in stone. It\u2019s of him in\u00a0That Thing You Do!\u00a0as a daffy wannabe rock star, and in a flash he\u2019s playing dad roles and he\u2019s the coach in\u00a0Chad Powers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is weird,\u201d Zahn agrees. \u201cIt just kind of represents chapters in your life. And yet I don\u2019t think of myself as an older guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe remarks that he was sitting in the car when he was shooting in Wales and it was cold and raining. Then it was a 5\u00bd-hour drive back to East London. He was in the car with Rick Gomez. \u201cWe were just talking about like, \u2018Wow, I\u2019m 57,\u2019 and we were looking up Jack Nicholson. How old was he when he did\u00a0The Departed? And we\u2019re older. We were like, we\u2019re older than the whole cast of\u00a0The Godfather, we\u2019re older than those guys now. It\u2019s just very interesting how time \u2026 and you know what I mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s like, I don\u2019t think of myself as this veteran,\u201d he muses, \u201cbut I guess I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe laughs and reflects that that\u2019s \u201cthe beauty of acting or beauty of being a character actor is that as you age, you just get to move into different categories, which is really kind of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s getting a kick out of playing in a sports comedy show. He feels like a little kid, he confesses. \u201cI get to be a coach, man. And if it\u2019s a hit, which I hope, then people call me Coach, man! I\u2019ll be walking around, \u2018Hey Coach.\u2019 If I go to a college football game, it\u2019s just going to be fun. I\u2019ll get those fringe benefits of like, \u2018Oh no, come to the box.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s kind of the great thing about being an actor,\u201d he says with childlike glee.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn\u00a0\u00a0Anaconda, which I just did, I just play this idiot. We all play idiots,\u201d he says referring to the movie\u2019s stars Paul Rudd and Jack Black.<\/p>\n
