{"id":267607,"date":"2025-09-30T22:37:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T22:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/267607\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T22:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T22:37:13","slug":"leon-bridges-honored-with-near-southside-street-sign-toppers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/267607\/","title":{"rendered":"Leon Bridges honored with Near Southside street sign toppers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over a decade ago, Fort Worth singer Leon Bridges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/entertainment\/living\/article89360017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded his debut album \u201cComing Home\u201d at Niles City Sound<\/a> in the Near Southside \u2014 a project that boosted him to his first of six Grammy nominations in 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His career skyrocketed from there, making him a household name and one of Fort Worth\u2019s hometown heroes, city officials say. Now, Fort Worth is honoring Bridges with permanent street signs near the recording studio that started it all.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth council members unanimously passed a resolution Sept. 30 to place street sign toppers in honor of Bridges along a block of South Calhoun Street bordered by East Vickery Boulevard and East Broadway Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>Visit Fort Worth will host an unveiling ceremony at noon Oct. 7 in front of Niles City Sound with remarks from Mayor Mattie Parker, Hear Fort Worth\u2019s Tom Martens, and Chip Adams with the Texas Music Office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leon\u2019s father Wallace Bridges said the recognition was \u201cwell deserved\u201d after his son\u2019s local musical and community accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo say we are proud of him is an understatement,\u201d said Bridges, who is a Fort Worth ISD trustee. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like having that kind of recognition at home. (David Moreno | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Bridges was born in Atlanta in July 1989. He was raised in Fort Worth and graduated from Crowley High School. His single \u201cBet Ain\u2019t Worth The Hand\u201d won the Best Traditional R&amp;B Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The singer described his fourth album \u201cLeon,\u201d released last year, as his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCZzNVZS6Ki\/?img_index=9&amp;igsh=dHY1OWZwYTc3OGlp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most personal work yet<\/a>\u201d with references to childhood memories and time spent in Panther City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Bridges\u2019 profile grew internationally, he maintained strong local roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The singer partnered with former Texas Christian University football coach Gary Patterson <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2023\/12\/21\/benefactors-of-the-big-good-build-community-by-uplifting-nonprofits-that-change-lives-locally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to launch a charity called The Big Good<\/a>. The nonprofit financially supports Tarrant Area Food Bank, Tarrant To &amp; Through Partnership, and United Community Centers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Fort Worth wishes to permanently recognize the legacy of Leon Bridges and his contributions to the music and film industries and his advocacy for musicians across many genres,\u201d the resolution on the street signs reads.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Parker surprised Bridges on stage during his sold-out Dickies Arena debut to issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/11\/15\/fort-worth-makes-leon-bridges-day-official-during-grammy-winners-dickies-arena-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formal proclamation declaring Nov. 15 Leon Bridges Day in Fort Worth<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The singer was the fourth musical act to receive such an honor in the city. Previous honorees include rock band the Toadies, singer Casey Donahew and country-western artist Cody Jinks.<\/p>\n<p>Bridges will return to Fort Worth for a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/09\/29\/leon-bridges-to-support-fort-worth-nonprofits-with-intimate-fundraiser-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold-out fundraiser performance at Bowie House<\/a> Oct. 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David Moreno is the arts and culture reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
