His <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-chick-evans-wins-nationa\/175404742\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">score of 286<\/a> set a record that stood 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>On the evening he won the Open at Minikahda in Minnesota, Evans did something more significant than any of his feats on the links. Encouraged by his mother, he decided to remain an amateur and put any prize money he would have received as a pro into a trust fund to provide college scholarships for deserving and needy caddies.<\/p>\n<p>In a career spanning more than four decades, Evans won 54 championships, including the Open and U.S. Amateur \u2014 both in 1916.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Brenda Starr and other comics debuted in the Tribune's comics magazine on June 30, 1940. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1940:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-first-brenda-starr-comic\/175346043\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brenda Starr<\/a> comic strip debuted in the Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Tribune Media Services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2010\/12\/09\/brenda-starr-reporter-to-leave-newspapers-jan-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ended<\/a> the daily drama of the red-headed reporter in early 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1947:<\/strong> The first scheduled <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-1st-scheduled-world-air\/175403646\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around-the-world passenger flight<\/a> stopped briefly at Chicago\u2019s Midway International Airport. Pan Am Airways President Juan Trippe presented Mayor Martin Kennelly with a Chicago flag that was part of the journey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The Rev. (Phil Greer\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> Chicago White Sox owners were prepared to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1988\/07\/08\/florida-sox-deal-details-disclosed\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1988\/07\/08\/florida-sox-deal-details-disclosed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">move the team<\/a> to St. Petersburg, Florida. But several minutes past a midnight deadline, and with some arm-twisting by Illinois Gov. Jim Thompson, the Illinois General Assembly passed an amended stadium bill that ensured the White Sox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/05\/22\/white-sox-saved-for-city-in-their-own-version-of-the-chicago-way\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/05\/22\/white-sox-saved-for-city-in-their-own-version-of-the-chicago-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would stay in Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The first of two bands of severe thunderstorms descends June 30, 2014, on Chicago. Jason Wambsgans\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014:<\/strong> A single storm system brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2014\/07\/01\/powerful-storms-heavy-wind-batter-chicago-area\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30 tornadoes<\/a>, including 18 in the National Weather Service\u2019s Chicago warning area, with winds as fast as 86 mph, dropping as much as 4 inches of rain in 24 hours. The storm knocked out power to 225,000 Commonwealth Edison customers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oUf2WxkYSd\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/07\/29\/it-almost-sounded-like-a-hurricane-derecho-weather-events-in-the-chicago-area-since-1965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018It almost sounded like a hurricane\u2019: Derecho weather events in the Chicago area since 1965<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The system also introduced some to the term \u201cderecho,\u201d a wind storm that stretched more than 240 miles, punctuated by wind gusts of more than 55 mph. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/lot\/2014_06_30_SevereStorms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this storm<\/a> actually contained a double derecho. Official said at the time there had been another double derecho in Chicago in 2010.
