{"id":268341,"date":"2025-10-01T05:07:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T05:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/268341\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T05:07:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T05:07:10","slug":"prebys-foundation-grants-county-500000-for-immigrant-legal-defense-program-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/268341\/","title":{"rendered":"Prebys Foundation grants county $500,000 for immigrant legal defense program \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The county Board of Supervisors approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1BbpfkuzfR\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$500,000 private grant<\/a> from the Conrad Prebys Foundation on Tuesday supporting a county program that provides free legal representation to detained immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>The Immigrant Legal Defense Program, which the board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/09\/09\/supes-vote-to-include-immigrant-children-in-countys-legal-services-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently expanded<\/a> to include unaccompanied immigrant minors, operates with an annual budget of $5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2022\/04\/28\/san-diego-county-launches-immigrant-legal-defense-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was created<\/a> to help ensure that immigrants facing deportation have access to an attorney in court.<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer, the board\u2019s chair, who introduced the motion, <a href=\"https:\/\/sdcounty.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7681001&amp;GUID=9D244DB5-9700-4823-920B-8A7D48FD5E8B&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a board letter<\/a> that, \u201cgiven the scale of current federal enforcement raids, demand on this program is rising and the need for new partnerships is stronger than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While immigrants have the right to an attorney during immigration proceedings, the federal government is generally not required to provide one.<\/p>\n<p>Since its establishment in 2022, the program has provided representation for 2,100 people from more than 60 countries \u2014 more than half of whom received counsel during fiscal 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone deserves a fair day in court, and thanks to this program, thousands of our neighbors have not been left to navigate the legal system without an attorney,\u201d Lawson-Remer said in a statement. \u201cThis partnership shows how we are building a community movement to defend constitutional rights and help families stay together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supervisor Jim Desmond voiced opposition and reiterated that he does not support the county program. \u201cI do not think this is the county\u2019s role or a priority for San Diego County taxpayers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, he voted in favor of widening the scope of the program, but said at the time that he only did so because the expansion concerned children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrankly, I would rather see all the money going to only legal defense for minors if that\u2019s the case,\u201d he said Tuesday. \u201cBut I don\u2019t agree that our budget should include paying for illegal immigrant legal defense funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the 2,108 cases taken on by the program since its launch, 848 remain open. Officials reported that most of the 1,260 closed cases ended with relief granted, dismissal or release from custody. There were 406 other cases that were closed for reasons such as a change of venue, attorney withdrawal or at the client\u2019s request.
