The coffee giant announced it will shutter 34 stores across the five boroughs as part of a nationwide downsizing effort that also includes 900 layoffs, per The New York Times. The cuts come amid a broader review of the chain’s North American operations, which Starbucks says is aimed at making sure each shop delivers on its promise of a “warm and welcoming space.”

“During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance and these locations will be closed,” chairman and CEO Brian Niccol said in a statement. The company added that union status was not a factor in which stores got the axe.

RECOMMENDED: The 16 very best coffee shops in NYC for lattes, cold brew, matcha and more

In New York, the closures hit some high-traffic corners in Manhattan—like 34th Street, University Place and Columbus Avenue—as well as several Brooklyn shops, from Atlantic Avenue to Hoyt Street. Queens also loses out, with stores in Astoria and Long Island City among those slated to close.
