Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (Shux) Saturday ticked off a new space first by becoming the first Indian citizen to conduct a scientific experiment on the International Space Station (ISS).With microgravity acclimation behind him, Shux is now diving into a diverse portfolio of experiments that could shape the future. On Saturday, he kicked off the scientific phase of the mission by starting on a cutting-edge biology study investigating muscle loss in microgravity, Axiom Space confirmed.“The crew is now fully immersed in their mission aboard the ISS, wrapping up their second day on orbit with a schedule full of scientific research and international outreach. They have transitioned smoothly from arrival protocols to hands-on research,” the firm said.Shux’s experiment — Myogenesis — was conducted inside the Life Sciences Glovebox. It will investigate the biological pathways behind skeletal muscle degradation in microgravity, one of the most critical challenges facing long-duration spaceflight. The findings could help develop targeted therapies for astronauts on future Moon or Mars missions and for patients on Earth suffering from muscular degenerative diseases.Though Indian-built payloads have flown and delivered data for decades, this is the first time an Indian has directly performed science on the ISS. Shux’s photograph from the Life Sciences Glovebox was available immediately, but is expected to be made public.Shux’s work is part of a broad suite of international experiments now underway on Ax-4. The other three members — Commander Peggy Whitson, and mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski (Suave) and Tibor Kapu — have entered into full-time research mode.Whitson led work on “Cancer in LEO-3”, a study that builds on earlier Axiom missions and explores how triple-negative breast cancer tumour organoids respond to treatments in space. Researchers hope microgravity will reveal new insights into drug resistance and tumour growth, potentially informing therapies on Earth and for astronauts exposed to radiation.Kapu, representing Hungary, deployed the ‘Rad Nano Dosimeter’, a compact device for monitoring radiation aboard the station. “Understanding long-term radiation exposure is essential for future exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit,” Axiom said. He also began preparations for the “Vitapric” experiment, which will examine the role of plant primers in improving the nutritional content of space-grown microgreens, a key step toward sustainable food production on long-duration missions. In addition, the crew initiated the “Cerebral Hemodynamics” investigation, which studies blood flow in the brain under microgravity using ultrasound technology. “This research could improve our understanding of cardiovascular adaptation in orbit and provide new approaches to treating conditions like stroke and hypertension back on Earth,” Axiom said.Beyond the lab, the mission also emphasises outreach. Shukla participated in a live video call with PM Modi, while Kapu was scheduled to speak with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán in a similar outreach event scheduled for Sunday. Meanwhile, Whitson and Uznanski are preparing for a special discussion with Axiom’s chief scientist Dr Lucie Low on how radiation research from Ax-4 could inform astronaut protection strategies on future deep space missions.

NEW DELHI: India’s journey in space turned a corner this weekend.
