Mayor Adams\u2019 office confirmed Tuesday that he about a decade ago dated Jasmine Ray, a woman he would later appoint to the newly created role of \u201csports czar<\/a>\u201d at City Hall and who is poised to release a book about the \u201chidden relationship\u201d she alleges to have had with the mayor.<\/p>\n

In light of the new info about their romantic relationship, Ray\u2019s appointment by Adams to the newly formed City Hall position in late 2022 is drawing condemnation from a government watchdog.<\/p>\n

The confirmation from Adams\u2019 team comes after Ray \u2014 whose formal title has been director of sports, wellness and recreation \u2014 announced on social media late Monday she\u2019s self-publishing the book this week<\/a>. A city official confirmed Ray resigned from her post Friday \u2014 just two days before the mayor announced he\u2019s abandoning his reelection bid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon, Kayla Mamelak, Adams\u2019 spokeswoman, said the mayor and Ray had a dating relationship roughly a decade ago and haven\u2019t had any romantic engagements since they both started working at City Hall.<\/p>\n

Adams, 65, is not married, but has for decades considered Tracey Collins<\/a>, a former senior Department of Education official, his domestic partner. Mamelak said Collins was aware of Adams\u2019 relationship with Ray, 42.<\/p>\n

Ray\u2019s publicist declined to respond to Mamelak\u2019s comments. Ray\u2019s book is supposed to come out Saturday.<\/p>\n

In her role, Ray has been pulling a $161,400 base salary since being appointed by Adams in November 2022. While holding her city job, Ray had permission from the mayor\u2019s office to work about 10 hours weekly as a \u201cconsultant\u201d for Cornerstone Daycare Center, a Brooklyn child care facility that relies on city funding, according to a copy of a waiver obtained by the Daily News on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In a statement announcing her hire<\/a>, Adams said Ray \u201cwill bring not only a deep passion\u201d to City Hall, but \u201calso a wealth of experience to our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before joining City Hall, Ray ran the United States Wallball Association, a local nonprofit.<\/p>\n

John Kaehny, a veteran government watchdog who runs the Reinvent Albany group<\/a>, called Ray\u2019s hire \u201cnepotistic\u201d and argued the mayor should have at a minimum consulted the city\u2019s Conflicts of Interest Board (COIB) before appointing her.<\/p>\n

\u201cElected officials are supposed to disclose familial relationships and relationships that create a potential conflict of interest so that COIB can offer advice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mamelak argued the mayor didn\u2019t need to consult the COIB because the matter involved a former girlfriend.<\/p>\n

The COIB declined to comment.<\/p>\n
