A part of it crashed into the Pacific Ocean during an April mission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A violent rocket explosion in Texas recently sent a cascade of fire and plumes of billowing smoke into the air that was captured on video.<\/p>\n<p>Firefly Aerospace&#8217;s Alpha rocket blew up in dramatic fashion while the company was testing and preparing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spacecraft<\/a> in late September at its central Texas facility for an impending launch from the West Coast. But things didn&#8217;t exactly go to plan when the rocket&#8217;s booster stage was destroyed during the preflight trial, which took place Monday, Sept. 29, in Briggs, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion is the latest setback for Firefly \u2013 which made headlines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/02\/blue-ghost-lander-lunar-surface-nasa-moon\/80714154007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/02\/blue-ghost-lander-lunar-surface-nasa-moon\/80714154007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earlier in 2025 for a pivotal moon landing<\/a> \u2013 after the Alpha rocket <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/vandenberg-launch-firefly-mishap-rocket-california\/83343497007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/vandenberg-launch-firefly-mishap-rocket-california\/83343497007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experienced another failure<\/a> in April during flight from California.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about Firefly Aerospace and its latest \u201cmishap\u201d with its Alpha rocket.<\/p>\n<p>Firefly Aerospace&#8217;s Alpha rocket explodes on test stand in Texas<\/p>\n<p>The first stage of Firefly Aerospace&#8217;s 96-foot-tall Alpha rocket exploded Monday, Sept. 29, while the spacecraft was vertical on a test stand.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting fireball and smoke column were captured by a CCTV camera at an auto parts business near Firefly&#8217;s facility in Briggs, Texas, about 50 miles north of Austin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/alpha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Classified as a small-lift launch vehicle<\/a>\u00a0capable of carrying more than 2,200 pounds of cargo, the Alpha rocket was being prepared for an upcoming launch for Lockheed Martin from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Proper safety protocols were followed, and all personnel are safe,&#8221; Firefly said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/missions\/alpha-flta007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/missions\/alpha-flta007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">update on the mission blog<\/a>. &#8220;The company is assessing the impact to its stage test stand, and no other facilities were impacted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company stressed that regular tests, even those that end in failure, provide data that helps engineers &#8220;improve our designs and build a more reliable system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What is Firefly Aerospace? Company made 2025 moon landing<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Firefly Aerospace<\/a> is a commercial spaceflight company in Cedar Park, Texas, that develops small- and medium-lift launch vehicles for orbital missions.<\/p>\n<p>Firefly made a name for itself earlier in 2025 when its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/01\/15\/nasa-science-ispace-firefly-blue-ghost-lander-spacex-launch-from-florida-kennedy-space-center-moon\/77659308007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blue Ghost<\/a>\u00a0lunar lander became the second-ever commercial spacecraft\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/03\/14\/eclipse-photos-from-moon-blue-ghost-lunar-lander\/82399865007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to make it to the surface of the moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After launching Jan. 15, 2025, atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the spacecraft managed to touch down about six weeks later on March 3 on the moon&#8217;s Earth-facing side\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/02\/17\/firefly-blue-ghost-lander-nasa\/78952956007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on a mission to deploy<\/a>\u00a010 NASA science instruments. The ensuing 14 days of surface operations were meant to help the U.S. space agency pave the way for humans to return in the years ahead\u00a0under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/25\/nasa-artemis-moon-mission-date\/86341332007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/25\/nasa-artemis-moon-mission-date\/86341332007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its Artemis program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Firefly&#8217;s Alpha rocket had another &#8216;mishap&#8217; in April<\/p>\n<p>The explosion is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/vandenberg-launch-firefly-mishap-rocket-california\/83343497007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/vandenberg-launch-firefly-mishap-rocket-california\/83343497007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the latest setback for Firefly&#8217;s Alpha rocket<\/a>, a part of which on April 29 crashed into the Pacific Ocean during a mission to launch a prototype satellite owned by Lockheed Martin into orbit from California.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket&#8217;s sixth flight overall, the mission was to be the first of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/news\/firefly-aerospace-announces-multi-launch-agreement-with-lockheed-martin-for-25-alpha-launches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a planned 25 launches<\/a>\u00a0in the next five years under an agreement between Firefly and Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/missions\/alpha-flta006\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fireflyspace.com\/missions\/alpha-flta006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">believe the problem<\/a> occurred during separation of Alpha&#8217;s core stage booster with its second stage less than three minutes into the flight from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/10\/california-rocket-launch-vandenberg-base\/84128076007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/10\/california-rocket-launch-vandenberg-base\/84128076007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vandenberg Space Force Base<\/a>.
