SAN ANTONIO – A lit candle may have been the cause of an early morning West Side apartment fire, investigators say. <\/p>\n
The fire started around 3:30 a.m. Monday at he Villas on Springvale off West U.S. Highway 90 near Springvale Drive. <\/p>\n
When San Antonio Fire Department crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from three second-story apartments. That prompted firefighters to immediately evacuate the entire building. <\/p>\n
Although a second alarm was briefly called for, firefighters were able to make a quick knockdown of the flames, preventing further damage to surrounding units.<\/p>\n
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion. The extent of the firefighter’s condition was not immediately released.<\/p>\n
Police said the fire may have started after a resident lit a candle and left the room. When the resident returned, the apartment was already on fire.<\/p>\n
No word on how many people are displaced because of the damage. <\/p>\n
