Paul Azinger wants Rory McIlroy to pick a lane.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the aftermath of a rowdy Ryder Cup weekend at Bethpage Black, Azinger \u2014 who captained the Americans to a win in 2008 \u2014 called out the reigning Masters champion over his conflicting remarks about the hostile fan behavior exhibited<\/a> when he was leaning into it himself.<\/p>\n \u201cToday in the press conference, after it\u2019s over, he\u2019s saying, \u2018I think golf should be held to a higher standard of decorum.\u2019 Isn\u2019t that what he said? But in the meantime, he says, \u2018F-you, F-you, F-you\u2019 in full voice for the world to see. He turns around and says to the guy, \u2018Shut the eff up,\u2019 the guy in the media asked him today, \u2018How did that feel, Rory, to tell the guy to shut the eff up and then hit it two feet?\u2019 And he said, \u2018It felt pretty effing good,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, bud, which is it, Rory?\u201d Azinger said Sunday<\/a> on GOLF\u2019s \u201cSubpar\u201d program.<\/p>\n Rory McIlroy\u2019s interactions with the Bethpage Black crowd dominated Ryder Cup storylines this year. Getty Images<\/p>\n The interactions between McIlroy, 36, and the boisterous Long Island crowd dominated headlines throughout the Ryder Cup.<\/p>\n Tensions boiled over Saturday when McIlroy told spectators to \u201cshut the f\u2013k up\u201d<\/a> before hitting a shot and relayed on a different hole to a course referee he wouldn\u2019t putt until the crowd \u201cshut up.\u201d<\/p>\n As the day continued, McIlroy demanded a fan get the boot<\/a> for hurling a homophobic slur at the Northern Irishman, while his wife, Erica Stoll, also grappled with a rogue drink being swatted in her direction<\/a>. <\/p>\n Paul Azinger spoke about Rory McIlroy\u2019s take on the Ryder Cup crowd during an appearance on \u201cSubpar.\u201d Youtube\/Subpar<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think we should ever accept that in golf,\u201d McIlroy said Sunday after Europe\u2019s 15-13 win over the Americans. \u201cI think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people.\u201d<\/p>\n Based on those remarks, Azinger had questions for McIlroy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u201cIs it that golf is held to a higher standard? Or are you just going to eff you the fans and act like that\u2019s okay?\u201d Azinger, 65, said. \u201cI love Rory, you know that, but you can\u2019t say that.
