{"id":270130,"date":"2025-10-01T21:06:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T21:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270130\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T21:06:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T21:06:17","slug":"max-nunez-arquitectos-raises-metal-house-on-chilean-hillside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270130\/","title":{"rendered":"Max N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arquitectos raises metal house on Chilean hillside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chilean studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/max-nunez-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arquitectos<\/a> has raised a prefabricated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steel<\/a> house onto columns for a sloping site in the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/chile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chile<\/a>, comparing it to a &#8220;lunar lander&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Casa en los Arboles (House in the Trees) was completed in 2023 on the edge of Conguill\u00edo National Park in the Andes.<\/p>\n<p>Near active volcanoes Llaima and Lonquimay, the 110-square metre (1,185-square foot) house is located in a popular spot for backcountry skiing through the araucarias, coihues, raul\u00edes and oak forests.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253755 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Metallic house in Chile\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Max N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arquitectos has created a metal house in Chile<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A house in this environment should be a super light element, a\ufb00ecting the vegetation around it as little as possible, generating a minimum footprint on the ground,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/new.mnaa.cl\/projects\/selected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max N\u00fa\u00f1ez Arquitectos<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It should be an anti-mimetic object, but a totally site-specific piece of technology \u2013 like NASA&#8217;s lunar lander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vertical machine-like house is located in a small clearing and raised on a steel skeleton that avoids cutting trees or transforming the land of the site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253763 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_col_20-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Raised metallic house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The house was raised to avoid affecting the local vegetation and ecosystem<\/p>\n<p>The prefabricated steel elements allowed a small construction team to assemble the house in just a few months.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the three compact floor plans has a different structural system that responds to the needs of the level.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253756 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Base of metal house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>It was prefabricated and assembled on site<\/p>\n<p>The small, rectangular ground floor is supported by four diagonal columns that branch out to hold the upper levels. The central trunk is enclosed by translucent glass and holds the home&#8217;s entry and storage space for mountain activity equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The second level spreads out horizontally, forming deep eaves for the ground level that keep snow away from the perimeter of the footings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253758 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Wood clad interior of metal house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>An external support system allowed for more open spaces in the compact plan<\/p>\n<p>A perimeter lattice beam wraps around the second level, &#8220;like a bridge that rests over the diagonals of the lower level,\u201d the studio said, explaining that moving the structural elements to the perimeter of the plan allowed the three bedrooms and two bathrooms to be arranged in a compact scheme around the central staircase.<\/p>\n<p>The upper level, which holds the social spaces such as the living room and kitchen 12 metres (40 feet) above the ground, is a cavernous space under an A-frame roof.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/22\/ironbark-house-klaus-carson-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ironbark-house-klaus-carson-studio-australia-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Ironbark House by Klaus Carson Studio\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Bushfire-resistant metal wraps Ironbark House in Australia by Klaus Carson Studio\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The studio explained that the ridgeline of the roof is rotated off-axis, set on a diagonal, opening the corners of the space and &#8220;gaining a close relation to the landscape and the trees surrounding the house&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This space gives a vantage point of the surroundings, as a watchtower detached from the ground, with a close relation to nature and the pass of time,\u201d the team said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253761 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1172.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen in metal Chilean house\" width=\"1719\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The social space is rotated to provide specific views<\/p>\n<p>The exterior walls that are not covered by the steep, standing seam metal roof feature floor-to-ceiling glass, while the interior surfaces are wrapped in a warm wood that juxtaposes the sleek metal details.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Max N\u00fa\u00f1es Arquitectos completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/12\/20\/galss-block-greenhouse-chile-max-nunez-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lightweight greenhouse<\/a> topped with glass block vaults.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2253813 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/max-nunez-casa-en-los-arboles-chile_dezeen_2364_cojpg-852x1172.jpg\" alt=\"Casa en Arboles Max Nunez\" width=\"1719\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Aspects that are not covered by the metal roof feature floor-to-ceiling glass<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to its glass and metal buildings, the studio has also designed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/09\/18\/max-nunez-arquitectos-hogar-aleman-chile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concrete care home<\/a> for elderly residents and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/03\/10\/concrete-roof-matches-steep-gradient-casa-ghat-chile-max-nunez-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ocean-front residence<\/a> in which the concrete roof runs parallel to the steel topography.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by Crist\u00f3bal Palma \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/estudiopalma.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Estudio Palma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project credits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Architect in charge:<\/strong> Max Nu\u00f1ez<br \/><strong>Collaborators:<\/strong> Sonoka Nakamura, Fabian Leiva.
