Local banks are ready to help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The federal government shutdown is already putting strain on thousands of local military families, many of whom say they don\u2019t expect another paycheck in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One Jacksonville mother, who asked to remain anonymous, told News4JAX the uncertainty has left her family in crisis mode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cDefinitely terrifying thinking in my head, oh God, how are we going to pay for our bills? How are we going to afford our rent? How are we going to pay for her formula, her diapers, everything?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Duval County is home to more than 68,000 military members and civilian defense employees. During a shutdown, essential federal workers \u2014 including military service members \u2014 are required to work without pay. Nonessential staff face furloughs or temporary layoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/01\/the-latest-government-shutdown-begins-as-nation-faces-new-period-of-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/01\/the-latest-government-shutdown-begins-as-nation-faces-new-period-of-uncertainty\/\"><b>Government shutdown begins as nation faces new period of uncertainty<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., says he is cosponsoring legislation that would ensure service members continue to receive pay during government shutdowns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIf you\u2019re living paycheck to paycheck, you can\u2019t afford to miss one,\u201d Fine said. \u201cIt\u2019s not as though they\u2019re not going to get paid [eventually], but for those people who don\u2019t have a lot of money sitting in the bank, they\u2019re going to have real issues. And that\u2019s what this bill would address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Financial institutions are also stepping in to offer relief. VyStar Credit Union, headquartered in Jacksonville, says it is prepared to help military families with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vystarcu.org\/personal\/resources\/news\/government-shutdown-member-assistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vystarcu.org\/personal\/resources\/news\/government-shutdown-member-assistance\">emergency relief loans<\/a>, \u201cskip-a-pay\u201d programs for existing loans or credit cards, and mortgage assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe offer things like emergency relief loans that really look at supplementing their monthly paychecks,\u201d said Dana Karzan, VyStar\u2019s chief marketing officer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/support\/government-shutdown-program\/?akredirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/support\/government-shutdown-program\/?akredirect=true\">USAA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navyfederal.org\/about\/government-shutdown.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.navyfederal.org\/about\/government-shutdown.html\">Navy Federal Credit Union<\/a> have announced similar programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But for many families, temporary relief doesn\u2019t solve the bigger issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur military, they\u2019re the ones that sign the government contract to go fight for our country,\u201d the Jacksonville mother said. \u201cBut our lawmakers who are supposed to be in charge of our country, they aren\u2019t really doing what\u2019s best for the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The first missed paycheck for active-duty service members would come on Oct. 15 if the shutdown continues.
