{"id":270381,"date":"2025-10-01T23:14:25","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270381\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T23:14:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:14:25","slug":"shootings-at-historic-lows-as-eric-adams-boasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270381\/","title":{"rendered":"Shootings at historic lows as Eric Adams boasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So much for sweating bullets in the summer heat.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Apple so far this year kept up its historic streak of record-low shootings, even after the summer when gun violence typically spikes, NYPD officials revealed Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Shootings and the number of gun violence victims plunged to the lowest levels in the city\u2019s history for the nine months of the year, according to newly released crime statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited a massive deployment of cops \u2014 who were mobilized from desk jobs to foot posts \u2014 into high-crime \u201csummer zones\u201d for the sustained decline in gun crime.<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited the record-low shooting numbers to a massive deployment of cops to high-crime \u201csummer zones.\u201d X\/NYPDnews<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp to 2,300 cops were sent to work in 72 summer zones across nearly 60 communities last May, the largest deployment of its kind in NYPD history,\u201d she said in a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this strategy wasn\u2019t just about size, it was about planned precision, and it worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newly released third-quarter crime stats also showed the city\u2019s subways were the safest they\u2019ve ever been for a July, August and September.<\/p>\n<p>Subway crime so far this year is down more than 4%, hitting the lowest level in 15 years outside the coronavirus shutdown, the numbers show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside of the COVID years, we just had the safest third quarter ever in transit with major crime falling by nearly 14%,\u201d Tisch said.<\/p>\n<p>The freshly unveiled NYPD statistics show nearly all major felonies fell in September compared to the same month last year, led by a 27% drop in murders. <\/p>\n<p>Year-to-date, murder is down nearly 18% compared to the same span in 2024, the data shows.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams made his first public appearance Wednesday since announcing he wouldn\u2019t seek re-election. X\/NYPDnews<\/p>\n<p>Rape was the only major crime to rise during the last quarter and year-to-date, with 13% and 19% increases, respectively, according to data. <\/p>\n<p>Police officials have attributed the rise in rapes to New York law recently broadening the crime\u2019s definition.<\/p>\n<p>The city saw 553 shooting incidents so far this year, compared to 693 recorded during the same span in 2024, data shows.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The 216 shootings during the third-quarter this year were New York City\u2019s lowest in recorded history, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The near-sterling crime numbers represented a bittersweet triumph for Mayor Eric Adams, who stood alongside Tisch during his first public appearance since announcing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/28\/us-news\/eric-adams-drops-out-of-nyc-mayoral-race-amid-increasing-pressure-i-know-i-cannot-continue-my-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he wouldn\u2019t seek re-election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Crime spiked in New York City and other major cities nationwide amid the pandemic\u2019s upheaval \u2014 a surge that stubbornly persisted as Adams took office in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>But the fever broke in January 2024, which kicked off seven straight quarters \u2014 and counting \u2014 in which major crime significantly decreased, NYPD data shows.<\/p>\n<p>The city this summer saw its lowest number of shootings for a July, August and September. Kyle Mazza\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Adams had hoped the improvements would buoy his push for a second term, but his re-election hopes were dashed by a plague of scandals \u2014 including his historic indictment on corruption charges.<\/p>\n<p>Hizzoner took the chance from the stage to blast mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani as \u201cproblematic\u201d for public safety and boasting he\u2019s leaving the city in \u201cgood shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has become so good for you guys that you don\u2019t even realize. But you know what?
