{"id":270492,"date":"2025-10-02T00:10:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T00:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270492\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T00:10:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T00:10:11","slug":"security-lines-at-jia-keep-moving-apace-for-now-despite-government-shutdown-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270492\/","title":{"rendered":"Security lines at JIA keep moving apace for now, despite government shutdown \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 The federal government shut down just after midnight Wednesday morning, and the impacts stretch across government agencies and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">But here in Jacksonville, airport officials expect that, at least for now, travel delays should be minimal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">TSA employees at Jacksonville International Airport reported for duty Wednesday, despite the possibility they may miss their next paycheck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Flights also continued on time for the most part, with only 11 delays and one cancellation reported as of about 5 PM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Michael Stewart, Jacksonville International Airport\u2019s Vice President of External Affairs, said he doesn\u2019t expect the shutdown to have much of an impact on airport operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cWe won\u2019t notice any impacts here for travelers because those workers they will encounter are considered essential workers and they\u2019re required to work,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">But in the past, extended government shutdowns have caused issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">During the 35-day government shutdown that started in December of 2018 and continued through early 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/government-shutdown-2025-travel-tsa-faa\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/government-shutdown-2025-travel-tsa-faa\/\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 10 percent of TSA workers called out sick<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">That did result in longer screening times at major airports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Stewart said it\u2019s his hope this shutdown doesn\u2019t extend that long, but in the event it does, TSA and air traffic control staffing could conceivably be impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cFor the early stages, I just suggest that travelers stay in touch with their airlines. They can give them the most updated impacts on their individual flights,\u201d said Stewart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Local Congressman Aaron Bean (R-FL 4th District) is cosponsoring two pieces of legislation at the federal level that aim to shield essential workers from being impacted by government shutdowns. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The \u201cPay Our Homeland Defenders Act\u201d would ensure TSA and other security personnel continue to be paid during a shutdown and the \u201cAviation Funding Stability Act\u201d would cover air traffic controllers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cTSA agents, along with ICE, Border Patrol, and DHS law enforcement, show up every day to keep us safe.
