{"id":270628,"date":"2025-10-02T01:21:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T01:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270628\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T01:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T01:21:09","slug":"trump-signs-executive-order-vowing-to-defend-qatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/270628\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump signs executive order vowing to defend Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order vowing to use all measures including U.S. military action to defend the energy-rich nation of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/qatar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qatar<\/a> \u2014 though it remains unclear just what weight the pledge will carry.<\/p>\n<p>The text of the order, available Wednesday on the White House\u2019s website but dated Monday, appears to be another measure by Trump to assure the Qataris following <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/qatar-explosion-doha-e319dd51b170161372442831a8023db5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel\u2019s surprise attack on the country targeting Hamas leaders<\/a> as they weighed accepting a ceasefire with Israel over <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/israel-hamas-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the war in the Gaza Strip<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The order cites the two countries\u2019 \u201cclose cooperation\u201d and \u201cshared interest,\u201d vowing to \u201cguarantee the security and territorial integrity of the state of Qatar against external attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty or critical infrastructure of the state of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States,\u201d the order says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures \u2014 including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military \u2014 to defend the interests of the United States and of the state of Qatar and to restore peace and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Order follows Netanyahu apology call<\/p>\n<p>The order apparently came during a visit to Washington on Monday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump organized a call by Netanyahu to Qatar during the visit in which Netanyahu <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-netanyahu-israel-hamas-war-gaza-708a08671b8842d7a7a5e250ec51351c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cexpressed his deep regret\u201d<\/a> over the strike that killed six people, including a member of the Qatari security forces, the White House said.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar\u2019s Foreign Ministry described the U.S. pledge as \u201can important step in strengthening the two countries\u2019 close defense partnership.\u201d The Qatari-funded Al Jazeera satellite news network declared: \u201cNew Trump executive order guarantees Qatar security after Israeli attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump also spoke on the phone later Wednesday to Qatar\u2019s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not release details about the call, though Qatar later said the two men spoke about Doha\u2019s efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. <\/p>\n<p>The true scope of the pledge by the U.S. remains in question. Typically, legally binding agreements, or treaties, need to receive the approval of the U.S. Senate. However, presidents have entered international agreements without the Senate\u2019s approval, like <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-united-states-government-911f25e443e64bb7a116afd8d0bfccf8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Barack Obama did<\/a> with Iran\u2019s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. <\/p>\n<p>And ultimately, any decision to take military action rests with the president. That uncertainty has clouded previous U.S. defense agreements in Trump\u2019s second term, like <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-nato-article-5-88883436438dae49ba9cacb6d4cfad0a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO\u2019s Article 5 guarantees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar order comes as Gulf Arabs reassess their security <\/p>\n<p>Qatar, a peninsular nation that sticks out into the Persian Gulf, became fantastically wealthy through its natural gas reserves. It has been a key partner of the U.S. military, allowing its Central Command to have its forward operating base at its vast Al Udeid Air Base. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Joe Biden named <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-russia-ukraine-coronavirus-pandemic-joe-biden-business-dfff33604f12df2665d060abb3ff8705\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Qatar as a major non-NATO ally<\/a> in 2022, in part due to its help during America\u2019s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. And Qatar has maintained close ties to Trump, whether through <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-qatar-deal-conflicts-saudi-arabia-emoluments-7379bee2e307d39bd43b534a05ae3207\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a real estate project with his eponymous Trump Organization<\/a> to offering the president <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-qatar-air-force-one-gift-plane-c4e1d73c3dbe18397c10e3d3d267bcd6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Boeing 747 to use as Air Force One<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of the Israeli attack, Saudi Arabia entered a mutual defense agreement with Pakistan, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pakistan-saudi-nuclear-pact-defense-e66e0ded8045812c8aea39e21d764836\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing the kingdom under Islamabad\u2019s nuclear umbrella<\/a>.
