1.\u00a0LA breaks ground on $2.6B Convention Center Expansion Project<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

Elected officials, dignitaries and downtown residents conducted a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the recently approved $2.6 billion Convention Center Expansion Project, as Los Angeles races to prepare the facility for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n

During a news conference outside the facility, Mayor Karen Bass and City Council members, among others, placed gold-colored shovels into the ground to mark the start of construction. The project will be built through a phased- delivery approach, meaning construction will occur leading up to Games, pause for the event, and continue through completion for 2029.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expansion of the LA Convention Center is crucial to our effort to revitalize the downtown area, create new economic opportunities and send a message to the world that LA is ready to compete and win on the global stage,\u201d Bass said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Councilman Curren Price, who attended the ceremony, suffered a medical emergency as a result of dehydration, according to his office. Price, who represents the Ninth Council District, was taken to a hospital to be monitored.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Jane Goodall, conservationist renowned for chimpanzee research, dies at 91<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

Jane Goodall, a famed primatologist\u00a0who was scheduled to appear at an event Wednesday morning in Pasadena, California, has died at age 91.<\/p>\n

The Jane Goodall Institute said in\u00a0post on Instagram<\/a>\u00a0that the renowned primatologist has died.<\/p>\n

“The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute has passed away due to natural causes,” the post reads. “She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States.”<\/p>\n

“Dr. Goodall\u2019s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” the Instagram post continued.<\/p>\n

Goodall\u00a0was born in England with a deep love for animals, but \u2014 as she once\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Spectrum News’ Giselle Fernandez \u2014 reading stories about Tarzan sparked her dream of one day living in the wilds of Africa.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0LA Council looks to ban outside work with immigration enforcement<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The Los Angeles City Council instructed its legal staff Wednesday to prepare an ordinance prohibiting municipal workers and sworn personnel from taking on outside employment with federal agencies conducting immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

In a 14-0 vote, the council approved a motion introduced by members Monica Rodriguez and Ysabel Jurado on Sept. 12 to ensure that city employees “do not participate in immigration enforcement agency actions,” calling it “critical to maintaining community trust and ensuring legal compliance with city and state policies.”<\/p>\n

Councilman Curren Price was absent during the vote.<\/p>\n

City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, Chief Legislative Analyst Sharon Tso and City Administrative Officer Matt Szabo are expected to draft the ordinance for the council’s approval.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0LA Councilman Curren Price taken to hospital from Convention Center event<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

City Councilman Curren Price was taken to a hospital by paramedics Wednesday after becoming weak from what turned out to be dehydration while attending a groundbreaking ceremony for the Los Angeles Convention Center expansion project.<\/p>\n

Price, 74, was among multiple city officials in attendance at the 7:30 a.m. event at the downtown convention center. He appeared to become dizzy as people were speaking at the event, and Mayor Karen Bass \u2014 a former nurse \u2014 helped tend to him.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and placed the councilman in a wheelchair and took him to a waiting ambulance.<\/p>\n

“During today’s groundbreaking for the expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center, Council member Curren Price experienced a health-related incident,” Price spokeswoman Angelina Valencia-Dumarot said in a statement. “After undergoing initial evaluations, medical experts determined that he was suffering from dehydration. Out of an abundance of caution, he will continue to be monitored.”<\/p>\n
