{"id":2712,"date":"2025-06-21T15:38:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T15:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/2712\/"},"modified":"2025-06-21T15:38:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T15:38:12","slug":"as-trump-struggles-to-secure-trade-deals-has-beijings-hand-been-strengthened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/2712\/","title":{"rendered":"As Trump struggles to secure trade deals, has Beijing\u2019s hand been strengthened?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The United States failed this week to reach a tariff deal with Japan, a key Pacific Rim ally, and has threatened to notify multiple countries of new duty rates on imports after talks with only one, the United Kingdom, have shown any results.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Those developments, which made the US look weak in the short term, should prompt China to take a harder line with Washington on reaching a deal, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>China, the world\u2019s second-largest economy, was hit especially hard by US President Donald Trump on April 2, which he dubbed <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3308033\/trump-opened-pandoras-box-liberation-day-can-it-ever-be-closed-again?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cLiberation Day\u201d<\/a>, when he raised duties on Chinese imports to more than 100 per cent. Citing concerns over US trade deficits, he also imposed double-digit tariffs on imports from many other Asian nations.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Country-specific \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs were put on hold for 90 days the following week \u2013 until July 9 for most countries \u2013 pending trade negotiations.
