{"id":271343,"date":"2025-10-02T07:46:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T07:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271343\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T07:46:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T07:46:24","slug":"sk-hynix-shares-hit-25-year-high-samsung-also-surges-as-chipmakers-partner-with-openai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271343\/","title":{"rendered":"SK Hynix shares hit 25-year high, Samsung also surges as chipmakers partner with OpenAI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Headquarters of Samsung in Mountain View, California, on October 28, 2018. <\/p>\n<p>Smith Collection\/gado | Archive Photos | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Shares of South Korean chip heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix surged Thursday, a day after the two companies partnered with artificial-intelligence major OpenAI as part of the U.S. firm&#8217;s Stargate initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung shares hit their highest since January 2021, rising over 4%, while SK Hynix stock surged more than 9% \u2014 highest since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/samsung-and-sk-join-stargate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a> that this partnership will &#8220;focus on increasing the supply of advanced memory chips essential for next-generation AI and expanding data center capacity in Korea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ChatGPT-maker said the two South Korean firms plan to scale up production of advanced memory chips, which are critical to power its AI models.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Seoul, and the top leaders at Samsung and SK Hynix.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI has also signed <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/samsung-and-sk-join-stargate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a series of agreements<\/a> to explore developing next-generation AI data centers in South Korea, including with the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT, telecommunications operator SK Telecom, as well as with Samsung subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, SK Hynix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/12\/sk-hynix-hbm4-chips-nvidia-samsung-micron.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that it was ready to mass-produce its next-generation high-bandwidth memory chips, cementing its leading position in the AI value chain. HBM is a type of memory that is used in chipsets for artificial-intelligence computing, including in chips from\u00a0global AI giant Nvidia \u2014 a major client of SK Hynix.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>HBM4 chips are expected to be the main AI memory chip needed for Nvidia&#8217;s next-generation Rubin architecture \u2014 a more powerful AI chip for global data centers.<\/p>\n<p>SK Hynix has been a main chip supplier to Nvidia, while rival Samsung has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=249962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reportedly\u00a0<\/a>been working to get its HBM4 chips certified by Nvidia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samsung has traditionally been the market leader in memory, but its position has been threatened by SK Hynix that has taken a lead in the HBM space. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/insight\/sk-hynix-and-samsung-neck-and-neck-in-q2-revenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0from Counterpoint Research in July found that SK Hynix had caught up with Samsung&#8217;s memory revenues in the second quarter, with both now vying for the top position in the global memory market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samsung&#8217;s second-quarter earnings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/31\/samsung-second-quarter-profit-halves-missing-expectations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">missed expectations<\/a>, as profits from its chip business declined almost 94% year on year, although its Chief Financial Officer Soon-cheol Park\u00a0said that the company expects a rebound in the second half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC&#8217;s Dylan Butts contributed to this report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Headquarters of Samsung in Mountain View, California, on October 28, 2018.
