{"id":271480,"date":"2025-10-02T09:04:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T09:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271480\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T09:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T09:04:17","slug":"starbucks-closes-san-jose-stores-as-competitor-moves-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271480\/","title":{"rendered":"Starbucks closes San Jose stores as competitor moves in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As one coffee giant shutters multiple locations in San Jose, another company is\u00a0moving in.<\/p>\n<p>Four Starbucks locations in San Jose have closed, following the company announcing it would <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2025\/message-from-brian-an-important-update\/#:~:text=Changes%20to%20some%20of%20our,for%20both%20openings%20and%20closures.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shutter 1% of its stores across North America<\/a>. Two other locations in Mountain View and one each in Cupertino, Santa Clara and Milpitas have also closed. The company laid off 900 corporate, non-retail employees and\u00a0has 18,300 stores left across the U.S. and\u00a0Canada. It\u2019s unclear how many retail workers have been affected by the closures.<\/p>\n<p>        Closed Starbucks locations<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1574 S. Bascom Ave., San Jose<\/li>\n<li>1847 E. Capitol Expressway, Silver Creek Plaza, San Jose<\/li>\n<li>670 River Oaks Parkway, River Oaks Plaza, San Jose<\/li>\n<li>125 Bernal Road, San Jose<\/li>\n<li>2401 Agnew Drive, Santa Clara<\/li>\n<li>22390 Homestead Road, Cupertino<\/li>\n<li>1380 Pear Ave., Mountain View<\/li>\n<li>2410 Charleston Ave., Mountain View<\/li>\n<li>127 Ranch Drive, Milpitas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, Dutch Bros, a drive-thru coffee shop chain, has submitted a proposal to bring its colorful refreshers and sugary coffee drinks to 2624 S. Bascom Ave. in San Jose near one of the closed Starbucks locations. A Dutch Bros location recently opened in Gilroy, with the proposed 2,536-square-foot San Jose location still under review. The <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.dutchbros.com\/overview\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company<\/a> has more than 1,000 locations across 19 states, including more than 200 in California.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch Bros representatives did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-221148 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_2019-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"\/>A proposal for drive-thru coffee shop chain Dutch Bros at 2624 S. Photo by Joyce Chu.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks\u2019 sales in North America have <a href=\"https:\/\/s203.q4cdn.com\/326826266\/files\/doc_financials\/2025\/q3\/SBUX-06-29-2025-Exhibit-99-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declined 2%<\/a> from the previous quarter due to a decrease in people ordering drinks, according to\u00a0the company\u2019s most recent quarterly report. It plans to expand locations next year and\u00a0is still renovating 1,000 of its coffee shops to give it a more homey feel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the review, we identified coffeehouses where we\u2019re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don\u2019t see a path to financial performance,\u201d Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Niccols wrote that employees working at shuttered locations would either be transferred to another location or given a severance package.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks workers at the Hamilton Plaza location in Campbell said they\u2019ve already seen an influx of customers from the shuttered San Jose storefront down the street on South Bascom Avenue. Two workers from the San Jose location transferred there, an employee at the Campbell location said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think (the closing of locations is) unfortunate to the community,\u201d barista Grace Ward told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cWe\u2019ve definitely seen a big influx here of people that used to go to that Starbucks that are disappointed because it\u2019s closed now. This Starbucks and that Starbucks are quite different. That (one) was like a small, cute little store. Photo by Joyce Chu.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Cody, a regular at the closed San Jose Starbucks location on South Bascom Avenue, said she was surprised to see it had shuttered with no advance warning when she swung by on Monday. She still needed her large cold brew, so she drove a few minutes to the Campbell location. It\u2019s bigger, has more seating and they like the baristas. They have met there every week for the past year, order large Frappuccinos and catch up on everything going on in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of their regular drink has gone up about a dollar since last year, Daniel said, but they will continue to come to Starbucks. President Donald Trump\u2019s 50% <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/mountain-views-downtown-businesses-see-tariffs-as-obstacle-to-staying-afloat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tariff<\/a> on Brazil, which produces a large portion of the world\u2019s coffee, has impacted the <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/starbucks-shutter-stores-amid-restructuring-130032266.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company\u2019s stocks<\/a> and passed costs on to customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody\u2019s cutting back right now.
