{"id":271809,"date":"2025-10-02T12:05:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T12:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271809\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T12:05:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T12:05:15","slug":"hole-opens-onto-nyc-street-giving-peek-into-subway-below","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/271809\/","title":{"rendered":"Hole opens onto NYC street &#8212; giving peek into subway below"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a real hellhole.<\/p>\n<p>A hole <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/08\/photos-show-gaping-hole-in-nyc-sidewalk-revealing-subway-underneath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened on a crumbling sidewalk<\/a> near Battery Park that briefly gave passersby a peephole into the subway \u2014 and a reality check about how thin the ground actually is.<\/p>\n<p>The baseball-sized hole in the asphalt of Battery Place and State Street opened sometime last week, according to a hair-raising Instagram video, but it has since been covered with an orange traffic cone bolted to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The wild video shows light apparently emanating from the hole, which lands smack in the middle of a blacktop patch on the walkway.<\/p>\n<p>The hole also runs deep, apparently going between a layer of concrete and the ceiling of the Bowling Green subway station, the video shows, offering sightseeing tourists a rare vantage point into the Bowling Green subway station below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/30\/us-news\/new-yorkers-are-about-to-get-hit-with-massive-tv-ad-blitz-as-nyc-mayoral-candidates-spend-more-than-600k-and-counting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Yorkers were quick<\/a> to bash the apparent hazard, with one commenting: \u201cAt this point human hair is holding the whole city together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love this city but it\u2019s a joke how bad the infrastructure is,\u201d wrote another.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37269465\" width=\"332\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/www-instagram-com-reel-dpphgcqctll-112608856.jpg\" alt=\"Hole in the NYC street leading to the subway below, labeled 'Special rat express entrance'.\" class=\"wp-image-37269465\"  \/>The video shows light coming from the hole. Instagram\/@whatisnewyork<\/p>\n<p>Other, de-sensitized New Yorkers joked about the situation, with one saying the hole was simply the \u201cspecial rat express entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear when \u2014 or how \u2014 the hole came to be, but a staffer hawking \u201cStatue of Liberty Sight Seeing\u201d Ferry tickets told The Post Wednesday that the cone has been serving as a placeholder since last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cone has been there for several days now,\u201d the worker, who did not want to be named, explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.57128906;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37269463\" width=\"337\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/www-instagram-com-reel-dpphgcqctll-112608858.jpg\" alt=\"A hole in a rocky New York City street shows a peek into the subway below.\" class=\"wp-image-37269463\"  \/>One New Yorker said that the hole was a \u201cspecial rat express entrance.\u201d Instagram\/@whatisnewyork<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince it\u2019s bolted down, it\u2019s not like it blows away or like it can be moved so it\u2019s not really bothering any of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume they will get to it eventually but as you can see all of this sidewalk has cracks in it.
