(Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

It is high time in the NASCAR playoffs as the Bank of America ROVAL 400 gears up to replace the Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 5, 2025. This they-are-cut race will see the final four drivers who are eliminated in making the final 12, and this will be kept to eight contenders in the championship.

And with few places available, does it make each lap carry huge ramifications? The uncharted combination of road course turns and oval speed in the Roval is even more dramatic and makes this one of the most critical races in the NASCAR playoff race.

Who’s Safe and Who’s In Trouble in the NASCAR Playoffs?

Two of the drivers already have their tickets to the Round of 8: Ryan Blaney (Team Penske) and Chase Elliott (Hendrick Motorsports). The consistency with which Chase Elliott has been performing and the win by Ryan Blaney at Kansas have secured them the next stage of the NASCAR playoffs.

Kyle Larson, William Byron, Denny Hamlin, and Joey Logano are in much safer positions. But in the NASCAR playoffs, though, nobody can ever be comfortable, particularly as the Roval is a course that is always comfortable. A couple of mistakes in Charlotte might wipe out those cushions in no time.

The pressure is far heavier for the drivers below the cut line. Ross Chastain and Tyler Reddick are road course talents who may be able to claw their way back. Bubba Wallace will need near perfection to stay alive in the NASCAR playoff chase. For Austin Cindric, Christopher Bell, and Ty Gibbs, only a win can realistically keep their championship hopes alive.

The Roval’s Unpredictable Impact on the NASCAR Playoff

The Charlotte Roval is infamous for producing chaos, and that chaos often reshapes the NASCAR playoff standings. This 2.28-mile, 17-turn circuit combines the oval’s speed with road course precision, testing every skill in a driver’s toolbox. The notorious “Heartburn Turn” (Turn 7) has been the scene of countless crashes and playoff-altering moments.

Last year’s Roval race featured 34 lead changes and multiple cautions, showing how quickly fortunes can swing. Aggressive road racers like Reddick and Chastain may thrive in this environment, while drivers protecting points could easily be caught off guard.

As Joey Logano explained to NASCAR.com: “The Roval is a survival game. You’ve got to be smart, but you can’t hold back.” That mindset sums up how dangerous and rewarding the Roval can be in the NASCAR playoffs.

What’s at Stake as the Field Narrows

With just eight spots available in the next round, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Playoff points provide a buffer for stars like Larson and Byron, but in the NASCAR playoffs, even a minor mistake can flip the bracket. Strategy calls, pit stop timing, and bold late-race moves will determine who advances.

The Bank of America ROVAL 400 kicks off at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network with streaming available on the NASCAR app and NBC Sports platforms. Once the checkered flag waves, the focus shifts to the NASCAR playoff Round of 8 at Las Vegas, Homestead-Miami, and Martinsville, before the championship finale at Phoenix.

Will a road course ace shock the field, or will the favorites hold steady? In the NASCAR playoff, the Roval has a reputation for changing everything, and this Sunday, it’s do-or-die.

Dogli Wilberforce is a sports writer who covers NASCAR, Formula 1 and IndyCar Series for Heavy Sports.
