Yet.<\/li>\n<li>Erewhon is known for its focus on healthy foods and expensive, celebrity-themed smoothies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Erewhon is coming to Phoenix, but not in the way fans initially hoped.<\/p>\n<p>The viral, Los Angeles-based grocery store posted on Instagram on Sept. 30 that a &#8220;taste of Erewhon&#8221; was &#8220;coming to your city.&#8221; The post featured pictures of 20 cities, including Phoenix, Miami and Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Erewhon later changed the wording of the caption to &#8220;shipping to your city,&#8221; dashing fans&#8217; hopes that the chain would be opening new locations. The post contained no further details; nevertheless, it raised excitement and curiosity, with nearly 95,000 likes as of Oct. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese immigrants Aveline Yokoyama and Michio Kushi founded Erewhon in 1966 in Boston as a bulk goods store. They were inspired by the teachings of a man who preached that &#8220;the only way to ensure world peace was, essentially, to eat more whole grains,&#8221; according to an article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/erewhon-smoothie-boston-los-angeles-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Cut<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Erewhon has gained a cult-following for its emphasis on healthy food. It went viral online for its celebrity-themed smoothies that sell for upwards of $20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Shopping in the West Valley: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/grocery\/stores\/2025\/10\/01\/vallarta-supermarkets-glendale\/86369978007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s different about this new Latin American grocery store<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Erewhon announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dougmelville\/2025\/09\/03\/erewhon-is-coming-to-nyc-but-access-comes-with-a-36000-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first expansion outside of California<\/a> in early September with plans to open a store inside of a members-only sports club in New York City.
