We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 gunhQQ\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/nicolas-cage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Cage<\/a> has once again baffled and excited film fans with the trailer for his latest movie \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/horror-film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">horror film<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/jesus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jesus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/nicolas-cage-ai-movies-longlegs-b2632640.html\">Cage<\/a>, 61, plays Biblical figure Joseph in The Carpenter&#8217;s Son, an upcoming reimagining of The Infancy Gospel of Thomas, an apocryphal gospel about the childhood of the religious figure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat awaits us when we turn at last to death?\u201d Cage says in the brief preview of the movie. \u201cLet my faith endure,\u201d he adds as disturbing images, including a crucifixion, fill the screen. \u201cFaith. My only strength to bear against the devil itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Cage says that his son, known as The Boy, \u201cbears a power I cannot understand. It\u2019s such a brilliant idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOk, maybe I\u2019m a bad Christian, but I think a sort of body horror introspective of Jesus (and Joseph) grappling with his extraordinary life-giving and healing powers, plus being tempted by Satan, is extremely interesting and could be very thought provoking,\u201d added another eager film fan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeated, can\u2019t wait for the discourse,\u201d wrote a third viewer, noting that the film might cause some controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNicolas Cage as Jesus\u2019 stepdad is not on my 2025 bingo card,\u201d joked a fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Young British actor Noah Jupe, 20, plays Jesus in the film, while singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, 37, will play his mother Mary. Fellow British star Isla Johnston, 18, will play the film\u2019s antagonist, mysteriously called The Stranger.<\/p>\n<p>The film has been directed by Lofty Nathan, an Egyptian-born British-American filmmaker, whose previous works include 12 O\u2019Clock Boys (2013) and Harka (2022).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-02-at-11-24-30.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Noah Jupe as The Boy in 'The Carpenter's Son'\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Noah Jupe as The Boy in &#8216;The Carpenter&#8217;s Son&#8217; (Magnolia Pictures)<\/p>\n<p>Unconventional Biblical films have previously been met with protests, most notably Martin Scorsese\u2019s The Last Temptation of Christ. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/willem-dafoe-last-temptation-christ-nosferatu-louis-theroux-b2679787.html\">Willem Dafoe<\/a> plays Jesus in the 1988 drama which ends with Christ coming down from the cross and being tempted by Satan.<\/p>\n<p>It depicts Jesus as having a yearning for family life and having sexual interests, and was met with much controversy when it was released, especially from the Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just strange, in a world of slasher films and porn, that people got so upset about this, because it\u2019s based on a novel and, broadly speaking, they\u2019re changing the classic story a little bit to consider the character of Jesus in a different way, that\u2019s all,\u201d said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/willem-dafoe-last-temptation-christ-nosferatu-louis-theroux-b2679787.html\">Dafoe earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not this plot to overthrow or change religious thought.
