\n\tElon Musk<\/a>, a self-proclaimed \u201cfree speech absolutist,\u201d has launched an effort urging his 227 million followers on X \u2014 the social media platform he controls \u2014 to cancel Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the past three days, the conservative-leaning billionaire has posted and reposted calls to cancel Netflix, as well as attacks on the company, at least 26 times. Musk, the world\u2019s richest person with a net worth of around $500 billion, said he has canceled his Netflix service. And he\u2019s telling everyone else who will listen to do so as well.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cCancel Netflix for the health of your kids,\u201d Musk wrote<\/a> on Oct. 1, quoting another user\u2019s meme depicting Netflix\u2019s \u201ctransgender woke agenda\u201d as a Trojan horse entering a fortress labeled \u201cyour kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMusk\u2019s anti-Netflix effort kicked off on Tuesday. Musk posted<\/a> \u201cThis is not ok\u201d in quoting the right-wing activist account Libs of TikTok\u2019s surfacing of a clip of Netflix\u2019s \u201cDead End: Paranormal Park\u201d in which the protagonist says he is transgender<\/a>. \u201cDead End Paranormal Park, a show on Netflix, is pushing pro-transgender on CHILDREN. This show is advertised for 7-YEAR-OLDS,\u201d Libs of TikTok said, referring to Netflix\u2019s TV-Y7 rating, meaning the show is suitable for viewers aged 7 or older. (Netflix canceled \u201cDead End: Paranormal Park\u201d after two seasons and it is not currently promoting the show.)<\/p>\n

\n\tSince then, Musk has reposted comments calling out pro-trans themes in other kids\u2019 shows on Netflix, including \u201cCoComelon\u201d and \u201cThe Baby-Sitters Club.\u201d He also has supported claims of an alleged anti-white hiring bias by Netflix, and criticized Democratic Party donations by company execs.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix has declined to comment on Musk\u2019s campaign. Because Netflix no longer reports subscriber numbers<\/a> on a quarterly basis, the impact of the Musk-led boycott may be difficult to quantify.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Thursday, Musk wrote<\/a> \u201cTrue\u201d in quoting a user who commented, \u201cTransgender propaganda isn\u2019t just quietly lurking in the background on Netflix. They are actively pushing it on users\u201d and linking to a March 2025 article on Netflix\u2019s Tudum<\/a> titled \u201cCelebrate Trans Day of Visibility with These 16 Movies and Shows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMusk also commented<\/a> \u201c\ud83d\udcaf\u201d in reply to conservative podcaster Benny Johnson\u2019s post saying, \u201cThe real reason the Netflix cancellation campaign has gone so viral: Netflix is sexualizing children by packaging explicit, graphic, radical sex topics as \u2018children\u2019s entertainment\u2019 \/ What Netflix is doing goes beyond a culture war fight. It\u2019s immoral. \/ And It should be illegal\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Wednesday, Musk reposted a user\u2019s \u201cDemonic\u201d response to Ian Miles Cheong\u2019s post<\/a> saying, \u201cA Netflix show, CoComelon, features interracial gay dads attempting to raise a baby as transgender who make the toddler dance for them in drag. This is the woke version of Bacha Bazi.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMusk also reposted<\/a> a claim by Libs of TikTok that 100% of political donations by Netflix employees in 2024 went to Democrats. And he commented<\/a> \u201cCancel Netflix\u201d in reply to the account\u2019s post about Netflix\u2019s 2023 report on diversity and inclusion asserting, \u201c@netflix appears to openly boasts about discriminating against White people. In their inclusion & diversity report, they celebrate that the percentage of racially underrepresented directors and lead characters has been growing significantly over the past few years. Why doesn\u2019t netflix hire based on qualifications instead of skin color??\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMusk has a transgender child, daughter Vivian Wilson, who in 2022 changed her name and gender. In an interview last year, Musk said<\/a>, \u201cI lost my son, essentially,\u201d and said he had been \u201ctricked\u201d into approving gender-affirming care for Vivian. According to Musk, she was \u201cdead, killed by the woke mind virus.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSupporters of Musk\u2019s anti-Netflix drive include conservative actor and comedian Rob Schneider<\/a>, who wrote in a post on X, \u201cDear @ElonMusk \/ Thank you for standing up against the evil Trans indoctrination programming of our children on Netflix and Disney,\u201d adding, \u201cGod bless you, Sir!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut not everyone is cheering on Musk. \u201cThis guy went from calling himself a \u2018free speech absolutist\u2019 to the most reactionary, whiney little cancel culture loving bitch on the internet,\u201d Tommy Vietor, co-founder of progressive media Crooked Media and co-host of \u201cPod Save America,\u201d wrote<\/a> Wednesday on X.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix has been the target of a boycott by conservatives before. In 2020, a backlash over Netflix\u00a0film \u201cCuties,\u201d which showed underage actresses performing highly sexualized dance routines and depicted them in other adult situations, led to a huge\u00a0spike in U.S. customer cancellations<\/a>\u00a0but the trend died out after a few days<\/a>. (\u201cCuties\u201d is no longer available on Netflix, after the company\u2019s licensing agreement for the title expired last year.)<\/p>\n

\n\tSeparately, ABC\u2019s temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel last month, over his comments about MAGA supporters trying to score political points from Charlie Kirk\u2019s murder, sparked numerous users of Disney+ and Hulu to cancel (or vow to cancel) their streaming subscriptions. Disney reinstated Kimmel\u2019s show as of Sept. 23<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix, in its famous Culture Memo<\/a>, says in the section titled \u201cArtistic Expression\u201d: \u201cRepresentation matters. Our members come from many different backgrounds and cultures, and they want to see a wide variety of stories and people on screen. This diversity is wonderful and it can create real tension since we all have such different views about what\u2019s acceptable \u2014 and what\u2019s harmful \u2014 on TV.\u201d It goes on to say that \u201cwe support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with\u201d and that, \u201cAs employees, we support these principles, even if some stories run counter to our personal values. And we understand that, depending on our roles, we may need to work on TV shows, films or games we perceive to be harmful. If you\u2019d find it hard to support the breadth of our slate, Netflix is probably not the best place for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2021, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended comedian Dave Chappelle<\/a> after Chappelle was slammed for his anti-trans comments in Netflix stand-up special \u201cThe Closer,\u201d a controversy that included a walkout by the company\u2019s own employees<\/a>. Sarandos also has defended\u00a0Netflix\u2019s decision to order three specials from Tony Hinchcliffe<\/a>, the comedian whose poorly received joke about Puerto Ricans\u00a0at a Trump rally last year ignited a media firestorm<\/a>.<\/p>\n
