{"id":272737,"date":"2025-10-02T20:25:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T20:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/272737\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T20:25:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T20:25:10","slug":"aols-dial-up-internet-takes-its-last-bow-marking-the-end-of-an-era-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/272737\/","title":{"rendered":"AOL&#8217;s dial up internet takes its last bow, marking the end of an era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">NEW YORK &#8212; It&#8217;s official: AOL&#8217;s dial-up internet has taken its last bow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">AOL <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/aol-shuts-down-dial-up-internet-275a81f8a725619663437350b7c7ed36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously confirmed<\/a> it would be pulling the plug on Tuesday (Sept. 30) \u2014 writing in a brief <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/help.aol.com\/articles\/dial-up-internet-to-be-discontinued?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a> on its support site last month that it \u201croutinely evaluates&#8221; its offerings and had decided to discontinue dial-up, as well as associated software \u201coptimized for older operating systems,\u201d from its plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Dial-up is now no longer advertised on AOL&#8217;s website. As of Wednesday, former company help pages like \u201cconnect to the internet with AOL Dialer\u201d appeared unavailable \u2014 and nostalgic social media users took to the internet to say their final goodbyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">AOL, formerly America Online, introduced many households to the World Wide Web for the first time when its dial-up service launched decades ago, rising to prominence particularly in the 90s and early 2000s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The creaky door to the internet was characterized by a once-ubiquitous series of beeps and buzzes heard over the phone line used to connect your computer online \u2014 along with frustrations of being kicked off the web if anyone else at home needed the landline for another call, and an endless bombardment of CDs mailed out by AOL to advertise free trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Eventually, broadband and wireless offerings emerged and rose to dominance, doing away with dial-up&#8217;s quirks for most people accessing the internet today \u2014 but not everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A handful of consumers have continued to rely on internet services connected over telephone lines. In the U.S., according to Census Bureau data, an estimated 163,401 households were using dial-up alone to get online in 2023, representing just over 0.13% of all homes with internet subscriptions nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While AOL was the largest dial-up internet provider for some time, it wasn&#8217;t the only one to emerge over the years. Some smaller internet providers continue to offer dial-up today. Regardless, the decline of dial-up has been a long time coming. And AOL shutting down its service arrives as other relics of the internet&#8217;s earlier days continue to disappear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Microsoft <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-closing-skype-7ac4e86f55acb40098476e01d8d4a473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retired video calling service Skype<\/a> just earlier this year \u2014 as well as <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/internet-explorer-shutting-down-e45abf1df9d34c135e41a01cf7d96c25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Internet Explorer<\/a> back in 2022. And in 2017, AOL <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-f1b9748bc7db41b9adea3231a6adfa14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discontinued its Instant Messenger<\/a> \u2014 a chat platform that was once lauded as the biggest trend in online communication since email when it was founded in 1997, but later struggled to ward off rivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">AOL itself is far from the dominant internet player it was decades ago \u2014 when, beyond dial-up and IMs, the company also became known for its <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/youve-got-mail-aol-elwood-edwards-dead-ed72c127cb0c775c5877c296fe938183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got mail\u201d<\/a> catchphrase that greeted users who checked their inboxes, as famously displayed in the 1998 film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan by the same name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Before it was America Online, AOL was founded as Quantum Computer Services in 1985. It soon rebranded and hit the public market in 1991. Near the height of the dot-com boom, AOL&#8217;s market value reached nearly $164 billion in 2000. But <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-b0b8c3993c4e42fa8da684dfcc29ee8e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tumultuous years followed<\/a>, and that valuation plummeted as the once-tech pioneer bounced between multiple owners. After a disastrous merger with Time Warner Inc., Verizon <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-537e5477f54d40c0be82060c03acc9a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired AOL<\/a> \u2014 which later <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-business-1e2e958195af5920ac5183c3794d93ee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold AOL, along with Yahoo, to a private equity firm.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">AOL now operates under the larger Yahoo name. A spokesperson for Yahoo didn&#8217;t have any additional statements about the end of AOL&#8217;s dial-up when reached by The Associated Press on Wednesday \u2014 directing customers to its previous <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/help.aol.com\/articles\/dial-up-internet-to-be-discontinued?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summer announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">At the time Verzion it sold AOL in 2021, an anonymous source familiar with the transaction <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/03\/aol-1point5-million-people-still-pay-for-service-but-not-for-dial-up-internet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNBC<\/a> that the number of AOL dial-up users was \u201cin the low thousands&#8221; \u2014 down from 2.1 million when Verzion first moved to acquire AOL in 2015, and far below peak demand seen back in the 90s and early 2000s.
