{"id":27353,"date":"2025-06-30T14:41:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T14:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/27353\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T14:41:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T14:41:12","slug":"man-suffers-infection-that-affects-us-all-it-was-actually-killer-cancer-that-cost-him-his-nose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/27353\/","title":{"rendered":"Man suffers &#8216;infection&#8217; that affects us all &#8211; it was actually killer cancer that cost him his NOSE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A man whose GP said his breathing issues were due to a\u00a0routine infection has now lost his entire nose to the real cause, a deadly form of <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/cancer\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d7f5c830-55a1-11f0-8887-a7bba95521ac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">William Brogan, 47,\u00a0from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire now faces major surgery to restore his face after medics were forced to amputate his nose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The only initial symptom the former chef had was a sore nose\u2014an ailment common to a variety of routine winter illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But after almost a year of doctors trying to relieve Mr Brogan&#8217;s illness with antibiotics, the real devastating cause was revealed to be the blood cancer lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Lymphoma is a cancer of the\u00a0lymphatic system\u2014a network of blood vessels and glands helps fight off infections\u2014 and which kills about 5,000 Britons per year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In Mr Brogan&#8217;s case, the disease originated in part of the lymphatic system in his nose, but by the time it was diagnosed in January this year, it had also spread into his mouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He claims doctors dismissed his worries about the ongoing nose pain and believes his cancer could have been caught earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I had been telling them for months and months that it was something more. They saved my life.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Family doctors most commonly prescribe antibiotics for nose pain in cases of\u00a0sinusitis, an infection of the sinuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While most sinusitis cases are triggered by viruses\u2014for which antibiotics don&#8217;t work\u2014if infections persists for a long period, it can be a sign it&#8217;s caused by a bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In these circumstances a medic can prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Studies suggest between one in 20 to one in six Britons get sinusitis each year, though many cases are mild and can be treated at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">As lymphoma can develop in any part of lymphatic system the symptoms patients experience can vary immensely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For example, some may develop swollen tonsils in the mouth, a lump in the tummy, or skin rashes depending exactly where the cancer is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the most common sign of the disease is a painless swelling in areas like the neck, armpit or groin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Other symptoms\u2014reported by some patients\u2014include\u00a0night sweats, unexplained weight-loss, a high temperature, breathlessness and\u00a0persistent itching all over the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Approximately 13,500 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma\u2014the more common version of the disease\u2014are diagnosed in the UK each year, about 37 cases per day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">About half (55 per cent) of patients will survive at least a decade after being diagnosed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One in 52 men and one in 71 women will develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma over the course of their life, according to charity Cancer Research UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">People in their 80s are the most likely to be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma of any age group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While the rates of this cancer have increased by almost a third across all age groups since the 90s there has been a small decrease in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/fb-11956341\/What-lymphoma.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What is lymphoma?<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph nodes, which is the body&#8217;s disease-fighting network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That network consists of the spleen, bone marrow, lymph nodes and thymus gland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are various types of lymphoma, but two main ones: non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Both have much better prognoses than many types of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">WHAT IS HODGKIN LYMPHOMA?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in the white blood cells. It is named after Thomas Hodgkin, an English doctor who first identified the disease in 1832.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It affects around 2,000 people each year in the UK, and 8,500 a year in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hodgkin lymphoma is most common between the ages of 20 and 24, and 75 and 79.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Five-year survival rates:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The survival rates are much more favourable than most other cancers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mol-bullets-with-font\">\n<li>Stage 1: 90%<\/li>\n<li>Stage 2: 90%<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Stage 3: 80%<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Stage 4: 65%\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Symptoms include:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mol-bullets-with-font\">\n<li class=\"class\">A painless swelling in the armpits, neck and groin\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Heavy night sweating<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Extreme weight loss\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Itching<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Shortness of breath\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Coughing\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Risk factors:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mol-bullets-with-font\">\n<li class=\"\">Lowered immunity<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">A family history of the condition<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Smokers\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Those who are overweight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Treatment:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mol-bullets-with-font\">\n<li class=\"\">Chemotherapy<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Radiotherapy<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Steroids\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"class\">Stem cell or bone marrow transplants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">WHAT IS NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Non-Hodgkin lymphoma\u00a0can occur anywhere in the body but is usually first noticed in the lymph nodes around sufferers&#8217; necks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Non-Hodgkin lymphoma affects around 14,000 new people every year in the UK.
