{"id":273808,"date":"2025-10-03T05:57:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T05:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/273808\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T05:57:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T05:57:16","slug":"bronx-nycha-tenants-recovering-after-huge-gas-explosion-causes-partial-building-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/273808\/","title":{"rendered":"Bronx NYCHA tenants recovering after huge gas explosion causes partial building collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Temporary boilers were being shuttled into a Bronx city housing complex to restore heat and hot water to residents a day after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/10\/01\/mott-haven-mitchel-houses-gas-explosion-causes-partial-collapse-bronx-nycha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massive gas explosion ripped the corner brick chimney off<\/a> a 20-story apartment building.<\/p>\n<p>City housing officials said investigators were still trying to determine what led to the Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/bronx-apartment-building-partially-collapses\/17916688\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">morning explosion<\/a> that rained bricks and debris on a Mott Haven street and courtyard below.<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, there no deaths or reported injuries caused by the thunderous explosion, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collapse at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/nycha\/downloads\/pdf\/Mitchel.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mitchel Houses<\/a> was a very unfortunate, isolated incident,\u201d a New York City Housing Authority spokesman said in a statement. \u201cWe are confident that our city agency partners will thoroughly assess this incident, and we look forward to their findings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Emergency workers respond to a partial building collapse at 205-207 Alexander Ave. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025 in the Bronx, New York, New York. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Workers were conducting a routine safety check on the boilers at a building along Alexander Ave. and E. 138th St. at around 8:15 a.m. when the explosion sent out puffs of steam, smoke, ash and debris \u2014 and a huge jolt that building residents felt in their apartments.<\/p>\n<p>Although the collapse was limited to the building\u2019s corner ventilation chimney, residents in apartments closest to damage were temporarily relocated to hotels at the city\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<p>Those left behind were waiting for heat and hot water to be restored, and were offered hot plates to prepare meals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Emergency workers respond to a partial building collapse at 205-207 Alexander Ave. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025 in the Bronx, New York, New York. (Barry Williams\/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started giving out these single burners yesterday, last night,\u201d said Eddie Colon, 71, who said he has lived in the building with his wife for 25 years. \u201cI got mine today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said authorities let him and his wife back inside the building, but he said he doesn\u2019t feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, we thought everyone would have to leave for good, but later they said only certain sides of the building were unsafe,\u201d Colon said. \u201cThey let some of us back in once they checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miosotiz Torres, 54, who has lived in the high-rise for 21 years, said she is now sleeping in the living room \u2014 so she can dash out quickly if something else happens. But it\u2019s not easy to sleep after Wednesday\u2019s explosion, she admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep my jacket and my little bag ready by the couch,\u201d Torres said. \u201cI want to be able to grab them and go.
