Blue\/Bloomberg via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\"><strong>NEW YORK<\/strong> &#8211; Over 50 Starbucks locations in New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/30\/business\/starbucks-abruptly-closes-dozens-of-nyc-locations-in-chaotic-downsizing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed without warning<\/a>, leaving both employees and landlords confused, The New York Post reports.<\/p>\n<p>   Dozens of NYC Starbucks shuttered <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WNYW\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Starbucks announced that over 400 stores would be <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2025\/message-from-brian-an-important-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed<\/a> on Sept. 25.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Included in those hundreds of stores are 54 Starbucks in New York City, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Not only have the coffee shops been closed, but they were closed with little to no notice to landlords.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They literally put signs in windows overnight without telling landlords and building managers,&#8221; Newmark Retail Vice Chairman Jeffrey Roseman told The Post. &#8220;There was no warning, no heads up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The company also failed to offer replacement jobs to city workers affected by the closures; the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/businesses\/fairworkweek-deductions-laws-employers.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fair Workweek Law<\/a> dictates that employees from closing stores must be offered a job at a location in the same borough.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Those employees are also entitled to first choice of any job openings in the vicinity of their original job.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2201225725-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">A customer holds a drink inside a Starbucks coffee shop in New York, US, on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025. DCWP Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/about\/commissioner.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vilda Vera Mayuga<\/a> wrote in the letter, &#8220;Starbucks appears poised to violate its legal obligations to employees in New York City locations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Starbucks has until tomorrow, Oct. 3, to explain how it will comply with the city&#8217;s labor laws.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WNYW\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The DCWP filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dca\/news\/007-25\/department-consumer-worker-protection-files-lawsuit-against-starbucks-wrongfully\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against Starbucks for &#8220;wrongfully terminating an employee&#8221; earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">According to the lawsuit, an investigation conducted by the department found that Starbucks illegally fired longtime barista Karmen Rich on December 27, 2023, without just cause.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2155187835-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">Mobile order and Uber Eats and Doordash delivery pick up area at Starbucks coffee shop, Queens, New York.
