Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa said they would keep it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Zohran Mamdani\u2019s latest proposal to eliminate New York City\u2019s Gifted &amp; Talented program is not just another political stunt \u2014 it\u2019s destructive and emblematic of a deeper problem in today\u2019s Democratic Party \u2014 the surface level appearance of a solution is sufficient,&#8221; Cuomo, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-poll-unhappy-nycs-direction-voters-favor-mamdani-mayor-wide-margin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trailing Mamdani by 18 points<\/a> in the latest Fox News survey of New York City registered voters, said in a statement Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Sliwa said Mamdani and Cuomo are &#8220;two peas in a pod,&#8221; arguing that Cuomo is a &#8220;chameleon trying to fool New Yorkers.&#8221; Sliwa accused the former governor of staying silent while de Blasio initially tried to phase out the gifted program in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-poll-reveals-mamdani-still-holds-commanding-lead-over-rivals-nyc-mayoral-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>NEW POLL REVEALS MAMDANI STILL HOLDS COMMANDING DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD OVER RIVALS IN NYC MAYORAL RACE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/zohran-mamdani-september-2025.png\" alt=\"Zohran Mamdani speaks to supporters\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani speaks to volunteers at a canvass launch in Brooklyn on Sept. 28, 2025.\u00a0 (Michael Nigro\/Pacific Press\/LightRocket via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa only garnered support from 11% of New York City registered voters in the latest Fox News survey. Among registered voters, Mamdani earned 45% support, while Cuomo picked up 27%, Sliwa maintained 11% and Mayor Eric Adams had 8%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adams, who like Cuomo was running as an independent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/eric-adams-drops-out-nyc-mayoral-race-mamdani-gains-ground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dropped out of the race<\/a> last week, heating up an already contentious mayoral election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why take away from our kids the very opportunities that helped shape your own future?&#8221; Adams asked in response to Mamdani&#8217;s plan to slash the gifted program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-polls-reveal-mamdani-commanding-lead-rivals-weeks-from-election-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>NEW POLLS REVEAL MAMDANI HAS COMMANDING LEAD OVER RIVALS WEEKS FROM ELECTION DAY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2022\/04\/mayor-adams-chancellor-banks-expansion-gifted-talented-programs-citywide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Adams has expanded<\/a> the elementary Gifted &amp; Talented program during his tenure, a reversal of de Blasio&#8217;s plan to phase out the program and stop testing 4-year-olds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The era of judging 4-year-olds based on a single test is over,&#8221; de Blasio proclaimed at the time, likening the gifted program to &#8220;the segregation of\u00a0students if they\u2019re labeled as \u2018gifted.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1759516576_862_andrew-cuomo.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Cuomo at Medgar Evers College\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Former Gov. Expand it to more children, not fewer. And let\u2019s be real, you went to a specialized high school,&#8221; Adams wrote to Mamdani on X on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science, a specialized high school in the Bronx. His campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital&#8217;s comment request.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked to clarify his position on the program during a press conference on Friday, Mamdani clarified that kindergartners, specifically, should not be separated by a test.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For kindergartners, we should not have a Gifted &amp; Talented program that is separating them on the basis of that assessment,&#8221; Mamdani said, without elaborating on his stance on the Gifted &amp; Talented entry point for third-graders.<\/p>\n<p>Adams&#8217; plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2022\/04\/transcript-mayor-eric-adams-the-expansion-gifted-talented-programs-citywide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">includes two entry points<\/a> into the Gifted &amp; Talented program: kindergarten and third grade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My commitment is solely on the question of kindergartners,&#8221; Mamdani said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Mamdani told The New York Times that he would renew de Blasio&#8217;s plan, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schools.nyc.gov\/about-us\/news\/announcements\/2021\/10\/08\/mayor-de-blasio-and-chancellor-meisha-porter-announce-brilliant-nyc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">eliminated the Gifted &amp; Talented test<\/a>, opting for a universal test in second grade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/curtis-sliwa-fox-news-intv-nyc-august-18-2025.jpg.png\" alt=\"Curtis Sliwa is the Republican nominee for mayor in New York City\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa is interviewed by Fox News Digital in New York City on Aug. 18, 2025.\u00a0 (Paul Steinhauser\/Fox News)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/bill-de-blasio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">return to the previous policy.<\/a> Ultimately, my administration would aim to make sure that every child receives a high-quality early education that nurtures their curiosity and learning,&#8221; Mamdani said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released Thursday, Cuomo said, &#8220;Our kids deserve clarity, not chaos, when it comes to their education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there are tens of thousands of applications for limited G&amp;T spots, parents are telling you something: They want more of it, not less. The answer isn\u2019t to say good riddance to those families. If there are issues with how young children are selected, then fix that and expand opportunities \u2014 give more at the start of education and more on-ramps later.
