Kathy Hochul signed legislation Monday extending the program through 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2013, the program authorizes automated speed enforcement in school zones and now includes about 2,200 cameras across 750 locations citywide. The initiative requires periodic legislative approval and <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/traffic_and_transit\/2025\/06\/03\/nyc-speed-cameras-could-go-dark-july-1-without-albany-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was set to expire July 1<\/a> without the governor\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p><b>What You Need To Know<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The city\u2019s speed cameras will remain active for another five years after Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation to extend the program through 2030<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The program was set to expire July 1 without the governor\u2019s signature, causing over 2,200 cameras in 750 locations to go dark<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Speed camera tickets cost $50 and are given to those who drive more than 10 mph above the speed limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s simple: speed cameras save lives and keep New Yorkers safe,\u201d Hochul said in a statement. \u201cThere is no greater priority for me than the safety of New Yorkers, and strengthening New York City\u2019s speed camera program means safer streets for everyone \u2014 from kids walking to school to seniors crossing the street to cyclists commuting home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/downloads\/pdf\/speed-camera-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">City data shows<\/a>\u00a0severe traffic injuries dropped nearly 30% at locations where cameras were recently installed, and one camera in Manhattan \u2014 at the corner of West 66th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side \u2014 led to a 75% reduction in speeding since it was installed in 2022, according to the city\u2019s Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Until 2022, the cameras operated only on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. In August of that year, the program <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/transit\/2022\/07\/31\/city-speed-cameras-on-24-7-starting-monday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expanded to 24\/7 enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speed camera tickets cost $50 and are given to those who drive more than 10 mph above the speed limit.<\/p>\n<p>Some lawmakers and the city\u2019s DOT have also been advocating for legislation that would require the most dangerous drivers to have speed-limiting technology installed in their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2025\/04\/28\/advocates-urge-albany-to-slow-reckless-drivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cStop Super Speeders\u201d bill<\/a> would apply to those with 11 or more points on their driving record in two years, or drivers who receive six speed camera tickets within 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>That bill has passed the state Senate but is still in committee in the Assembly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The city\u2019s speed cameras will remain active for another five years after Gov.
