But what she trapped was entirely unexpected: a new species of marsupial.<\/p>\n<p>The animal, named Marmosa chachapoya, is a tiny mouse opossum with reddish-brown fur and a mask-like facial pattern. Its body length is about four inches, but with its tail, it measures about 10 inches total \u2014 the tail exceeds the length of the body. Its discovery occurred in the \u201ccloud forests\u201d at an elevation of approximately 8,740 feet above sea level, much higher than where mouse opossums are typically found.<\/p>\n<p>An \u201cUnusual\u201d New Marsupial Species From Peru<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-560812\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/researchers-at-rio-abiseo-national-park.jpeg\" alt=\"Researchers At R\u00edo Abiseo National Park\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" class=\"size-full wp-image-560812 post-img-landscape\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-560812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silvia PavanThe research team at R\u00edo Abiseo National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Silvia Pavan, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/new-mammal-species-discovered-in-peruvian-andes\/?sc=swhr&amp;xy=10067143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> about the unique creature, said she realized \u201cimmediately that this was something unusual.\u201d But turning that hunch into a formal species name took years of work. Her team compared the specimen both anatomically and genetically with known mouse opossums in museum collections, looking for any similarities and differences.<\/p>\n<p>The newly identified species is described in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/american-museum-novitates\/volume-2025\/issue-4037\/4037.1\/A-New-Species-of-Marmosa-Mammalia--Didelphimorphia--Didelphidae\/10.1206\/4037.1.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Museum Novitates<\/a>, with the study published in June 2025. The holotype, a single specimen, was caught on the eastern side of the Peruvian Andes. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-560814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/new-peruvian-marsupial.jpeg\" alt=\"New Marmosa Chachapoya Marsupial\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" class=\"size-full wp-image-560814 post-img-landscape\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-560814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pedro PelosoOnly one specimen of this marsupial has been observed and examined scientifically.<\/p>\n<p>According to the description, Marmosa chachapoya diverges from close relatives like Marmosa lepida and Marmosa andersoni thanks to its DNA differences, as well as its physical traits, such as its elongated snout.<\/p>\n<p>The new species\u2019 name pays tribute to the Chachapoya culture, an ancient society that once inhabited the very cloud forest where the marsupial was found, before the rise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/how-did-the-inca-empire-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Inca Empire<\/a>. As Pavan explained, using the term \u201cChachapoya\u201d gave the discovery an ecological and cultural link, given that the species is \u201conly known from that locality, which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/allthatsinteresting.com\/cloud-forest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cloud forest<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>More Potential New Animal Species From The Peruvian Expedition<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-560813\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/peruvian-cloud-forest.jpeg\" alt=\"Peruvian Cloud Forest\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" class=\"size-full wp-image-560813 post-img-landscape\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-560813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silvia PavanLittle is known about the biodiversity of cloud forests, like the ones in the Peruvian Andes.<\/p>\n<p>Marmosa chachapoya may not be the only surprise from the 2018 expedition, either. \u201cOver half of the mammal species that we have seen during the expedition, they are not described by science,\u201d Pavan told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/northcoast\/article\/california-professor-discovers-new-marsupial-peru-21069695.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SFGATE<\/a>. Among the yet-to-be-described specimens is a semiaquatic rodent.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00edo Abiseo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and difficult to access \u2014 reaching its interior requires long treks and precise planning. <\/p>\n<p>The new animal discovery \u2014\u00a0and the others that have yet to be announced \u2014 proves just how little is actually known about the biodiversity of high-altitude cloud forests in Peru. \u201cIt\u2019s a reminder of the critical importance of scientific exploration and conservation in areas like R\u00edo Abiseo,\u201d Pavan said. <\/p>\n<p>Conservationists emphasized that documenting new species is essential: Naming them is the first step toward assessing their vulnerability and protecting and preserving their natural habitats.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, only one Marmosa chachapoya specimen is known to science. While it\u2019s now confirmed that it\u2019s a previously undocumented species, many unanswered questions about the creature remain. Its full geographic range, population size, and natural history are still mysteries at this point. Researchers are hoping that future fieldwork will uncover more specimens.<\/p>\n<p>It all began as a rare squirrel hunt.
