San Francisco Recreation and Parks is extending the original six-month permit for \u201cR-Evolution\u201d to March 2026, according to a spokesperson for the department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cWhen we first permitted the piece, it was for six months to a year, because we weren\u2019t sure if we might need the space [for] something else,\u201d said Tamara Aparton, a spokesperson for the department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cR-Evolution,\u201d by Petaluma-based artist Marco Cochrane, was erected in April with funding provided by the nonprofit Sijbrandij Foundation; <a href=\"https:\/\/building180.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Building 180<\/a>, a women-led organization that installs large-scale public art; and San Francisco Recreation and Parks, which owns the land. In order to extend beyond March 2026, organizers would need approval from the San Francisco Arts Commission\u2019s visual arts committee and the Recreation and Park Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">The installation bypassed the usual two-week public comment period required for permanent public art by the Arts Commission because it was temporary and privately funded. It was placed on the Arts Commission\u2019s agenda just 72 hours before the body voted to approve it \u2014 much to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2025\/04\/20\/naked-lady-sculpture-sf\/\" data-post-id=\"4edfd40c-fb94-408f-bd3e-d159e2b894d4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chagrin of the work\u2019s critics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cConsidering this statue was foisted on us with no public process, it\u2019s pretty annoying that it\u2019s going to be there longer, especially considering how gaudy and ugly it is,\u201d said Ted Barrow, an art historian. \u201cThe body is exceedingly specific and almost pornographic. They have described it as obstructing the view down Market Street of the iconic Ferry Building, and as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/sep\/12\/plop-art-rachel-whiteread-bad-public-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plop art<\/a>,\u201d a pejorative for works that are thoughtlessly installed in public spaces, without regard to the surroundings. They have also criticized the decision to showcase a male artist\u2019s work intended to express feminine strength.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cAs a gallery owner who has focused much of my program on supporting female artists for nearly 12 years, I would like to see more female curators consulted for these projects,\u201d Aimee Friberg, a curator and gallerist, told The Standard in April. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">\u201cI also would like to see foundations that have the means use their resources to shift this imbalance. If the goal is to empower women, there\u2019s a very clear way that this can happen: Engage women artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Corrections: Building 180 is a for-profit organization.
