{"id":276819,"date":"2025-10-04T09:40:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T09:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/276819\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T09:40:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T09:40:12","slug":"ufl-says-goodbye-to-three-franchises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/276819\/","title":{"rendered":"UFL says goodbye to three franchises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the United Football League continues to struggle for survival, it will likely have to shed some of the bigger markets it\u2019s called home over the last few seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-leagues-and-governing-bodies\">The UFL, which combined the previous versions of the USFL and XFL, is shuttering the Memphis Showboats, Michigan Panthers, and San Antonio Brahmas as part of a larger reorganization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/10\/03\/ufl-to-leave-three-markets-in-reshuffle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Sports Business Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The three franchises were apparently selected in large part due to the size of the stadiums in which they play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-leagues-and-governing-bodies\">\u201cDue to stadium constraints, the available venues in these areas do not align with our new vision of focusing on smaller, more intimate settings that elevate the fan experience,\u201d reads a league statement provided to SBJ.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the Panthers and Brahmas were among the better-attended in the eight-team league, Michigan\u2019s Ford Field (58,300) and San Antonio\u2019s Alamodome (73,000) were hard to fill. Memphis, meanwhile, finished last in league attendance in the 58,000-seat Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, it had been reported that the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Roughnecks, Memphis Showboats, and Michigan Panthers <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/ufl\/four-usfl-conference-teams-relocating-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would be relocated<\/a> to Boise, Columbus, Florida (likely Orlando), and Kentucky (Louisville). Columbus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/07\/31\/mike-repole-buys-into-ufl-promises-to-bring-his-entrepreneurism-to-spring-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been confirmed<\/a> as a 2026 UFL market, but the others remain TBD.<\/p>\n<p>While overall attendance declined by 5% last season and <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/ufl\/ufl-massive-ratings-hit-second-season.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV ratings took a significant dip<\/a>, it appears that the league\u2019s focus will now be on maximizing attendance at smaller stadiums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have 14,000 fans in an arena that fits 60,000, it looks empty,\u201d investor Mike Repole, who is taking over business operations for the UFL, said. \u201cWhen you have 14,000 in a place that sits 15,000, it\u2019s standing room only. Changing the optics is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the contraction, sagging ratings, and low attendance, Repole sees not just a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel but a chance to fulfill the promise of successful spring pro football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be aggressive as far as being nimble and scrappy and gritty and making aggressive moves,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/ufl\/future-expansion-16-teams-billionaire-investor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he said in July<\/a>. \u201cIf by 2035, if we can\u2019t have 16 teams, I\u2019m going to consider it a personal failure. This is it.
