It’ll be fun, they said. They didn’t say it would involve a Saturday without Mizzou Football! Grrr.

Jokes aside, this is a needed break for the people who attend games in Columbia. Whether as a participant or observer. Five games in a row is a lot. So take this weekend and enjoy your early October.

There are good games on today, and few sporst satisfy the itch when you don’t have a rooting interest quite like College Football. The most intriguing game today for me, and probably a lot of Mizzou fans, is the Alabama versus Vanderbilt contest.

If you forgot, last year Vanderbilt beat Alabama for the first time since 1984. Since 1960, Vanderbilt has only beaten the Tide three times. 1969, 1984, and last year. So this matchup has been one sided, and for decades Vanderbilt was barely competitive. So much so that they hired Woody Widenhofer despite knowing how bad he was at Missouri, and things went about how you’d expect them to.

James Franklin was considered a mastermind for winning 9 games in back to back seasons. Winning 9 games at Vandy? Forget it. 8 wins was a miracle, and that was something that has happened only 3 times since the end of World War 2 (now 5 times if you include Franklins’ two years). But since Franklin left it was a return to normalcy for the ‘Dores. Then in 2021 they hired Clark Lea, and while it took some time (and some commitment) he got things going.

The difference though, is Alabama sleep-walked through the contest last year. Alabama was #1 in the country having just come off an emotional win over Georgia (hey that happened this year too). I’m sure Alabama figured they would do what they always did to Vanderbilt. Now the game is circled. If Vandy beats Alabama again, that changes a WHOLE LOT of narratives around college football.

Missouri plays Alabama next also, and Vanderbilt later this year. It might be better for Mizzou to have Alabama fresh off back to back big wins, they might be easier to clip that way. Either way, the Tide versus ‘Dores should be a fun game.

College Football Games to Watch: Week 6

RockMNation has affiliate partnerships.
