{"id":277662,"date":"2025-10-04T17:39:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T17:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/277662\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T17:39:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T17:39:17","slug":"hundreds-attend-justice-march-for-kaiden-morgan-johnston-in-morwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/277662\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds attend justice march for Kaiden Morgan-Johnston in Morwell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the main street of Morwell, in eastern Victoria, the sound of marching footsteps and the rhythm of clap sticks could be heard ringing out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><strong>Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers\u00a0are advised this article contains the image and name of a person who has died.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Around 600 people marched from The Gathering Place community centre to the police station, where they called for action on violent crimes in the wake of the alleged murder of Kaiden Morgan-Johnston, 18, on the other side of town, last Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Elders addressed the mourning crowd, calling for Indigenous voices to be heard and for Mr Morgan-Johnston\u2019s death to bring positive change in the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He was walking to a friend\u2019s house and was about 200 metres from his home when he was allegedly stabbed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young man with curly, dark hair stands on an oval.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/016cf7085ea728001cf9ce903b6f96bb\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kaiden Morgan, 18,\u00a0died in hospital following the incident. (ABC Takeover)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His best friend, Tyrese Walsh, 20, \u00a0was also allegedly attacked but survived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tyson Fenton, 19, and a 16-year-old boy have been charged with Mr Morgan-Johnston&#8217;s murder and have been remanded in custody to appear in court in coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Morgan-Johnston and Mr Walsh were part of the cultural dance group called<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/takeover\/programs\/takeover-latrobe-valley\/takeover-latrobe-valley-winner-the-boorun-boys\/104297330\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104297330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the Boorun Boys and were featured on ABC Takeover<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>The justice marches<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Tuesday, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-30\/kaiden-morgan-memorial-morwell\/105835204\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105835204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 200 family members and friends walked to Mr Morgan-Johnston&#8217;s memorial<\/a> site on The Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking to the ABC outside of the family home, loved ones said he was a proud Indigenous man who always made everyone smile, was a &#8220;generational leader&#8221; and their lives would never be the same without him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Saturday morning the community gathered a second time for the even larger march.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A photo of people holding up signs and protesting in a crowd, with Aboriginal symbols and colours \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1afb6fcbdb49af75223fd03735513608\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Morgan-Johnston&#8217;s supporters are seeking justice for the teenager whose life was tragically cut short. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His father Willy Morgan said he wanted justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not getting any younger but before I go, I want justice,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I made a promise to my son and I will keep it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s so unreal, the heart that boy had; he was beautiful.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gunaikurnai elder Reverend Kathy Dalton said the community lost a strong, young Aboriginal man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;His life was taken too short, for what? (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We should be able to walk home, or walk down the street of the town we live in without fear from everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We should be able to speak freely about the wrongs in our community, when people do wrong in the community, we should be able to pull them aside and say &#8216;Hang on a minute, we do not do that&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Dalton said violence needed to stop and everyone needed to look after each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Government, fix the crisis of crime that keeps happening and keep making those laws and close that gap,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Now we wait, we wait as a community, as a family, for justice.
