{"id":278032,"date":"2025-10-04T21:21:40","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T21:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/278032\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T21:21:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T21:21:40","slug":"new-york-city-provides-long-term-support-to-five-local-arts-organisations-the-art-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/278032\/","title":{"rendered":"New York City provides long-term support to five local arts organisations &#8211; The Art Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) has announced five new members of its <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dcla\/cultural-funding\/city-owned-institutions.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cultural Institutions Group<\/a> (Cig)\u2014an exclusive programme for private arts organisations that operate on public land to receive long-term support from the city, including an annual operations subsidy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">One arts organisation from each of the city\u2019s five boroughs was inducted into the group\u2014Brooklyn\u2019s <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/bricartsmedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bric<\/a>, Manhattan\u2019s <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/pregonesprtt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pregones\/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater<\/a>, the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bxcm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronx Children\u2019s Museum<\/a>, the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/noblemaritime.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noble Maritime Collection<\/a> on Staten Island and the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.louisarmstronghouse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louis Armstrong House Museum<\/a> in Queens. At the event, both he and Cumbo made special mention of all of the administration&#8217;s accomplishments in the past four years\u2014but they only uttered Mayor Eric Adams\u2019s name a couple of times. (Just two days prior, <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nyc-mayor-2025-election-adams-cuomo-mamdani-37e731e3750b073c60bbbe88ae61bf58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adams had dropped his bid for re-election<\/a>, withdrawing from a heated mayoral race. Adams, who famously <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-loves-to-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loves a good party<\/a>, was not present at the Bric event.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Coco Killingsworth, the chair of Cig, defined members of the programme as \u201cprivate, non-profit organisations whose role is to be a public good. They\u2019re places of joy, refuge and restoration\u2014and the pride of their boroughs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Cumbo, with her characteristic enthusiasm, served as emcee of the event. She introduced the directors of each of the five new Cig members in turn. After each speaker, musical interludes served as examples of the type of work the organisations support. The Noble Maritime Collection \u201ccelebrates New York\u2019s working waterfront and makes it accessible to everyone\u201d, said its director, Ciro Galeno Jr. Meanwhile, the Bronx was the last borough in the city to open a children\u2019s museum, in 2022. \u201cWe are regularly sold out, which is not something many museums can say,\u201d said Denise Adusei, director of Bronx Children\u2019s Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Cig, established in 1869 with the American Museum of Natural History as its founding member, is composed of museums, historical societies, performing-arts organisations, botanical gardens and zoos across New York City.
