JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Jacksonville\u2019s new fiscal year began with a city budget that followed contentious negotiations this summer. <\/p>\n

City Council Vice President Nick Howland called the budget \u201ca big win for Jacksonville\u2019s families.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo budget is perfect,\u201d Howland said. \u201cThere are probably still ways to cut as we go forward next year. But this is something the whole council can be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia held a press conference at Jacksonville International Airport, criticizing what they described as excessive city spending. <\/p>\n

Howland acknowledged some validity to their concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last two years, we\u2019ve had excessive spending,\u201d he said. \u201cFor example, this budget collected over $120 million more than expected last year. We chose to cut spending and give some of that back to property owners.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that there was still waste in the budget. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll keep looking at that to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and deliver a common-sense budget for the people of Jacksonville,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Public safety remains the city\u2019s top priority, with more than half of the general fund\u2014over $1 billion\u2014allocated to police, firefighters, and related needs. \u201cJacksonville gives our heroes what they need,\u201d Howland said.<\/p>\n
