Covering tech start-ups across China, the UK, Singapore and Canada, among other countries, author Mehran Gul said China today \u201cis the only competitor\u201d against the US.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cOthers are trying, but they\u2019re not good enough to be dangerous\u201d, Gul \u2013 winner of the Financial Times\/McKinsey Bracken Bower Prize, who previously covered tech topics for the World Economic Forum and the United Nations \u2013 said in his book.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe rise of DeepSeek and China\u2019s open-source AI models, such as Alibaba\u2019s Qwen, have proved that China\u2019s AI research is strong\u201d, Gul said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In September, DeepSeek\u2019s landmark peer-reviewed article on its R1 reasoning model was published by the British journal Nature, marking a significant leap for China\u2019s AI community.
