After over a decade of bringing costumes, joy, and unforgettable Halloween memories to the Alamo City, Hocus Pocus Halloween Costume Shop will be closing its doors permanently after the Halloween season of 2025.

This wasn’t an easy decision, and it weighs incredibly heavily on our entire team. For 12 incredible years, Hocus Pocus has been more than just a shop; it’s been a vibrant cornerstone of San Antonio’s unique holiday spirit, a place where imaginations ran wild, and where local, veteran-owned pride helped thousands transform into their wildest Halloween dreams.

Like many independent, local businesses, especially veteran-owned ones, we’ve faced an increasingly challenging landscape. The overwhelming presence of large Halloween chains that get in the Halloween Spirit by setting up shops next to ours. Then there’s the growing burden of tariffs on our unique and quality inventory, and the unpredictable economic climate have all combined to make it unsustainable to continue delivering the high-quality, personal Halloween experience you know and love. We’ve fought hard to keep the magic alive, but ultimately, the current realities have become too difficult to overcome.

But through it all, one thing has remained constant: YOU.

Our greatest joy, our most cherished memories, and the true heart and soul of Hocus Pocus has always been our amazing community. We’ve loved every moment spent helping you find that perfect pirate hat, the most enchanting fairy wings, or the scariest monster mask. Witnessing your excitement, seeing your faces light up, and receiving the incredible photos of your Halloween adventures has been our greatest reward. You weren’t just customers; you were family – part of our Halloween family.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, San Antonio. Your support, your laughter, your loyalty, and your shared passion for all things Halloween have fueled us for 12 unforgettable years. We are so incredibly thankful for every single one of you.

While this chapter is closing, we want to make our final act the most spirited yet! Let’s fill these last weeks and our final Halloween season with the vibrant energy and spooky fun that only San Antonio knows how to create. Come visit us one last time, share your favorite Hocus Pocus memories, find that last perfect costume, and help us celebrate the incredible journey we’ve shared.

Let’s make this farewell a celebration of everything we’ve built together.

With immense gratitude and a touch of melancholy magic,

The Hocus Pocus Halloween Costume Shop Team

Posted by Hocus Pocus Halloween Costume Shop on Friday, September 26, 2025

The store is located at 8507 McCullough, Suite D-5 for anyone still looking for that last touch to their “Life of a Showgirl,” “K-Pop Demon Hunters” or Victor Wembanyama getup.

A few miles south, at 111 Allensworth St., the family-owned Gibson Costume Shop is also serving its final customers after 97 years of business, having spent the last century fulfilling San Antonians’ costuming ambitions with all kinds of glitzy, spooky and regal wear.

General Manager Sandra Torres said that while Gibson Costume Shop has seen a slight downturn in business – largely at the hands of online retailers like Amazon – that isn’t the reason it plans to close by the end of 2025.

For its owners, after nearly 100 years, it’s simply time.

“We’re ending on a high note,” Torres said. “It’s already in its fifth generation.
