Rapper Bad Bunny responded to the backlash surrounding the NFL\u2019s decision to book him for this year\u2019s Super Bowl Halftime show<\/a> as he kicked off the 51st season of \u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican native, whose real name is Benito Antonio Mart\u00ednez Ocasio, said he was \u201cexcited\u201d to be named the headlining act for the big game at Levi\u2019s Stadium in Santa Clara in February, but urged critics they have \u201cfour months to learn\u201d Spanish.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited to be doing the Super Bowl, I know that people all around the world who love my music are also happy,\u201d Bad Bunny said during Saturday\u2019s monologue.<\/p>\n

The rapper broke out his native tongue for a 30-second message before he sent a message to his critics.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially all of the Latinos and Latinas in the world here in the United States who have worked to open doors,\u201d he said in Spanish. \u201cIt\u2019s more than a win for myself, it\u2019s a win for all of us. Our footprints and our contribution in this country, no one will ever be able to take that away or erase it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The music producer teased the non-Spanish speakers, telling them they needed to study the language to enjoy the upcoming performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you didn\u2019t understand what I just said. You have four months to learn,\u201d he mockingly suggested.<\/p>\n

During the monologue, SNL cut to an edited video montage of Fox News personalities and guests saying that \u201cBad Bunny is my favorite musician and he should be the next president.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many pundits and politicians called out the NFL\u2019s decision to choose the 3-time Grammy winner after he refused to bring his tour to the US, fearing federal agents<\/a> would be outside his concerts.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there was the issue of \u2014 like, f\u2013king ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it\u2019s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,\u201d he told i-D last month.<\/p>\n

Bad Bunny had recently completed a 31-show residency in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Trump administration officials clarified ICE agents would be at the Feb. 8, game, whether Bad Bunny liked it or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally,\u201d Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski <\/a>said on \u201cThe Benny Show<\/a>.\u201d \u201cNot the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you and apprehend you and put you in a detention facility, and deport you. Know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is contrary to how it used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said NFL officials\u00a0<\/a>wouldn\u2019t be able to sleep because of their decision in choosing Bad Bunny. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey suck, and we\u2019ll win, and God will bless us, and we\u2019ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day,\u201d Noem\u00a0told conservative commentator Benny Johnson.<\/a> \u201cThey won\u2019t be able to sleep at night because they don\u2019t know what they believe, and they\u2019re so weak, we\u2019ll fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department of Homeland Security is responsible for keeping it safe,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I have the responsibility for making sure everybody goes to the Super Bowl, has the opportunity to enjoy it and to leave, and that\u2019s what America is about.\u201d<\/p>\n
