(File photo by Chris Stone)<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Public Library will celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/bannedbooksweek.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banned Books Week<\/a> with several events intended to fight against the censorship of literature.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the national event \u2013 which is in its 43rd year \u2013 is \u201cCensorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the escalation in attempts to ban books in libraries, schools, and bookstores around the country, George Orwell\u2019s cautionary tale \u201c1984\u201d serves a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/bannedbooksweek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a> from the library. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The week culminates on Oct. 11, <a href=\"https:\/\/bannedbooksweek.org\/let-freedom-read-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let Freedom Read Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntellectual freedom and the free flow of information and ideas are the cornerstones of an informed and engaged public,\u201d said SDPL director Misty Jones. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCensorship efforts \u2013 including attempts to restrict access to library materials \u2013 run counter to the mission of the San Diego Public Library.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Featured events include Pride Storytime featuring Lil Miss Hot Mess at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/public-library\/central-library\/denny-sanford-childrens-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denny Sanford Children\u2019s Library<\/a>, 330 Park Blvd., and Banned Book Trivia at Little Italy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ballastpoint.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ballast Point Brewing<\/a> at 6 p.m. on Thursday, 2215 India St.<\/p>\n<p>During the week, the library will also host storytimes featuring banned books, a Freedom to Read author event, banned books bingo and screenings of films based on books that have been challenged, a statement from the SDPL read.<\/p>\n<p>SDPL is also a participating library in the <a href=\"https:\/\/booksunbanned.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Books Unbanned program<\/a>, in partnership with the San Diego Library Foundation, which allows anyone ages 12 to 26 living in the United States free access to SDPL\u2019s online collection of banned or restricted eBooks and eAudiobooks. <\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Library Association<\/a>, 2024 saw 821 attempts to censor library materials and services, with 2,452 unique titles challenged.
