{"id":279749,"date":"2025-10-05T15:13:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T15:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/279749\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T15:13:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T15:13:09","slug":"two-with-point-loma-ob-ties-win-people-in-preservation-awards-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/279749\/","title":{"rendered":"Two with Point Loma-OB ties win People in Preservation awards \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For making a mark on local historic preservation, a resident and a project with connections to the Point Loma-Ocean Beach area have been honored with People in Preservation awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/sohosandiego.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Save Our Heritage Organisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The awards \u2014 12 in all \u2014 are now in their 43rd year, highlighting excellence in restoring, reusing, promoting and protecting San Diego\u2019s historic places, according to SOHO.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/09\/06\/the-joan-is-here-liberty-station-cuts-the-ribbon-on-new-performing-arts-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center<\/a> in Point Loma \u2014 named for late San Diego philanthropist Joan Jacobs and her husband, Irwin \u2014 received an Adaptive Reuse Award. The center, nicknamed \u201cThe Joan,\u201d is the conversion of an old Navy building at Liberty Station, formerly Naval Training Center San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>Eric DuVall, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/obhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Beach Historical Society<\/a>, was given a Culture Keeper Award for his work as \u201ca leading steward of Ocean Beach and Point Loma\u2019s historical and cultural identity and one of the community\u2019s most engaging advocates for local history,\u201d SOHO said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The honorees] embody what preservation is all about \u2014 saving historic places and keeping their stories alive,\u201d said Alana Coons, SOHO\u2019s education and communications director.<\/p>\n<p>Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center<\/p>\n<p>The reuse of Liberty Station\u2019s Building 178 respects the structure\u2019s original scale, decorative features and materials while reimagining the interior to serve as the new home of Cygnet Theatre and the broader performing arts community, according to SOHO.<\/p>\n<p>The 42,000-square-foot project includes the 280-seat proscenium-style Joseph Clayes III Theater and the 150-seat Dottie Studio Theater, along with rehearsal rooms, green rooms and gallery space. It opened to the public Sept. 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis thoughtful restoration and adaptation honor the building\u2019s Spanish Colonial Revival style, NTC\u2019s architectural signature, which unified the campus and reflected San Diego\u2019s regional design identity,\u201d SOHO said. \u201cHistoric arcades, windows and colonnades that had been sealed over in prior remodels are prominent again. The careful blend of historic fabric and contemporary function results in a new cultural landmark for San Diego. \u2026 It also reinforces the ongoing vitality of Liberty Station\u2019s Arts District, where historic structures are reborn as centers of community, culture and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric DuVall<\/p>\n<p>In addition to leading the OB Historical Society, DuVall is a past president of the La Playa Trail Association and writes the \u201cA Page from History\u201d column for the Point Loma-OB Monthly, sharing historical tales of the area\u2019s people and places.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Eric DuVall, president of the Ocean Beach Historical Society, is the winner of a Culture Keeper Award from the Save Our Heritage Organisation. (SOHO)<\/p>\n<p>The local native is a graduate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/08\/20\/a-page-from-history-100-years-of-point-loma-high-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Point Loma High School<\/a> (class of 1972) and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and pursued graduate studies at San Diego State University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric\u2019s preservation work goes beyond the all-important task of raising awareness of historic places through his storytelling.
