Water Rate Increase TBD <\/p>\n

If you\u2019re wondering that too, here\u2019s what you need to know: The San Diego City Council on Tuesday voted to put off the rate increase decision for a few weeks. <\/p>\n
The proposal on the table is for a 63 percent water and 31 percent wastewater increase over the next four years. After weeks of raising parking rates and other fees, councilmembers couldn\u2019t get behind another hike. <\/p>\n
Councilmember Kent Lee joined us on the podcast Friday to discuss the vote and comments he made from the dais about how city leaders have eroded public trust.<\/p>\n
I asked him what residents get out of the Council\u2019s decision to delay the vote.<\/p>\n
He said he doesn\u2019t have an answer for that yet, and only the next couple of weeks will tell if the city has done everything to lower rates. The time will also allow city leaders to reflect on how the city communicates the need to raise revenue during a tough budget year.<\/p>\n
\u201cCollectively everyone could acknowledge the real truth, which was this wasn\u2019t enough. We couldn\u2019t accept that this was the final amount,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
What happens next?<\/strong> They are going to meet again on the rates on Oct. 28. In the meantime, we\u2019ll be watching the city\u2019s Public Utilities Department. As our MacKenzie Elmer reported, the department is struggling financially<\/a>. <\/p>\n
