(Ed Wagner Jr.\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979: <\/strong>For three hours, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-for-3-hours-the-park-wa\/156315328\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grant Park became a church<\/a> and Pope John Paul II presided. (Antonio Perez\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> Former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/10\/05\/van-dyke-taken-into-custody-after-jury-convicts-him-of-2nd-degree-murder-aggravated-battery-for-each-of-16-shots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted of second-degree murder<\/a> and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. (Daryl Coldren\/Field Museum)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023:<\/strong> At least 960 migrating birds, the highest number on record, died in \u201cmassive carnage\u201d at McCormick Place Lakeside Center, according to David Willard, a retired bird division collections manager at the Field Museum. Birds were crashing into windows even as monitors collected the casualties, Willard said.
